Can I hope to live on, or for a life of peace,

when separation has scattered my household far and wide,

a blaze that my sighs make fiercer?

Can I forget my son, my pride in my exile?

I shall weep for him all my days and all my life.

And I pass my days in anxiety and grief,

and remain sorrowful after him until my death.

Do the nights wear away the best son I treasured,

while the days leave me the worst of my daughters?

In Ismail I hoped for a reserve against hardship,

and help against my fate in what was to come.

Then my hope was dashed when my treasure was snatched away

by my fate, which felled me with an arrow of separation.

A little child, great of soul, yearning for piety,

and never drawn to passions or youthful follies.

You departed from us, Ismail, leaving desolate

our homes, though their courtyards are inhabited.

Though you are absent from my sight, you are present

in my heart, like an engraving in solid stone.

    سقى عهدهن الله من سنوات

    You lived but seven of humankind's years;

may God shower rain upon the days of those years.

Your image is in my eyes, as though you still

roam and run upon my chambers' rooftops.

I placed you in a grave, though you had been within my heart

a dweller; I could not keep my composure at your loss.

and bade him farewell, a farewell of final severance.

And oh, my sorrow—if only healers could heal me!

with him, by a grave amid crumbling bones.

Peace be upon him whenever the east wind blows,

and I offer him the finest prayers.
