  1. مآثر لو تركنا شرح جملتها

    غنيت فيها عن التفصيل بالجمل

    Glorious deeds—were we to leave their full account untold,

    I could dispense with detail, content with summaries.

  2. منها الحميد الذي أبقيت سيرته

    في آل شاور حتى سار في المثل

    Among them is the noble course you maintained

    toward the house of Shawar, until it became proverbial.

  3. مازلت توسعهم بشراً وتكرمهم

    حتى كأن ليالي القوم لم تزل

    You have kept lavishing smiles upon them and honoring them,

    until it seemed the people's nights had never ended.

  4. ولست في هذه الدعوى بملتمس

    شهادة ولسان الحال يشهد لي

    And for this claim I seek no

    testimony: the tongue of circumstance bears witness for me.

  5. سجية من وفاء فيك لو خلقت

    في صبغة الشعر المسود لم يحل

    A trait of loyalty in you—had it been created

    in the hue of jet-black hair, that hue would never change.
