أسفي لملك عاضدي عطلت
حجراتهits chambers بعدafter الندىgenerosity والباسand valor
حجراته بعد الندى والباس
Alas for al-ʿĀḍid’s realm! Empty stand
its chambers, where once were bounty and valor.
أخذتseized بنانthe fingers of الغزthe Ghuzz منof أموالهits wealth
أخذت بنان الغز من أمواله
ورجالهand its men بمخانقby the throats of الأنفاسbreath
ورجاله بمخانق الأنفاس
The fingers of the Ghuzz have seized its wealth
and gripped its men by their windpipes.
وعسىand perhaps اللياليthe nights أنto تردrestore زمانكمyour time
وعسى الليالي أن ترد زمانكم
لدناًsupple كعودlike the bough of البانةthe bān tree المياسgracefully swaying
لدناً كعود البانة المياس
And may the nights restore your days,
supple as a bān tree’s swaying bough.
