    Tell Ibn Dukhan, when you come to him,

    while his face glistens with wine:

    Let my stipend go into his mother's arse, even if it is

    many times what is in Surat al-Zukhruf.

    And slap the nape of abasement, even if it lies

    between the priest's nape and the bishop's.

    فاحلق لحاهم آمناً وانتف

    Time has put people's whiskers in your power;

    so shave their beards without fear, and pluck them.

    The bureau stands open to you, with no overseer

    vigilant in purpose, and no supervisor.

    واسرق وخن وابطش وخذ واخطف

    So earn, acquire, save, and hoard;

    and steal, betray, strike ruthlessly, take, and snatch.

    And make the most of the interlude, before

    the Gospel is supplanted by the Qur'an.

    This is the smoke of poetry; I have sent it

    to Dukhan—smoke of the paltriest torch.
