Behold, the sword’s edge has left no mind

among the people but bewildered and wavering.

You terrified humankind, till even a doer of good feared

for himself many times more than an evildoer.

For the flashes of keen blades and their sound

are thunderclaps at which prescribed duties tremble.

And the sword’s clang is the most hideous melody,

ever singing among necks and warbling.

Pardon, or else al-Muqattam, out of fear,

will melt, and the Nile’s water will surely freeze.
