أما المكين المرتضى فعله
فإنهfor indeed he جوهرةa jewel الوقتthe age
فإنه جوهرة الوقت
As for al-Makīn, whose conduct is pleasing,
The chosen machinist, his deed
he is indeed the jewel of the age.
Is a gem of time
قدindeed نزهkept free الرحمنthe All-Merciful أفعالهhis deeds
قد نزه الرحمن أفعاله
عنfrom شيمةthe trait التقصيرnegligence والمقتand loathing
عن شيمة التقصير والمقت
The All-Merciful has indeed kept his deeds free
God has purified his acts
from the traits of negligence and loathing.
Of the traits of shortcoming and blame
وإنماbut rather السرتيal-Sirtī لاnot قدسsanctify الرحمنthe All-Merciful
وإنما السرتي لا قدس الرحمن
منanyone who يعزىis ascribed إلىto سرتSirt
من يعزى إلى سرت
But it was al-Sirtī—may the All-Merciful not sanctify
My secret is nothing but God's sanctity
anyone ascribed to Sirt—
Who ascribes it to my secret?
سودblackened ماwhat بيضwhitened منof حاجتيmy request
سود ما بيض من حاجتي
بعرضwith a reputation أوor ليقةan inkwell wad الزفتpitch
بعرض أو ليقة الزفت
who blackened what had been whitened of my request
Blackened what's white of my need
with his reputation, or a pitch-soaked wad.
With a pretext or slick of pitch
فإنso if يكنthere is برa favor فعجلthen hasten بهwith it
فإن يكن بر فعجل به
فالسحتfor the wretch لاnot يسمحis generous بالسحتwith ill-gotten gains
فالسحت لا يسمح بالسحت
So if there is a favor, hasten to grant it;
If it's righteousness, hasten with it
for the wretch is not generous with ill-gotten gains.
For dawn does not allow for dawn
