Ah, you who have forgotten an affection of old,
Listen, you who forget a long-standing affection:
I pass the night keeping faith with it, remembering it even in sleep.
I spend the night remembering it, preserving it even in sleep.

I see you, whenever you set your sights on some grave undertaking,
I see you, whenever you gesture toward a weighty task,
ride toward it through every terror, hastening.
Ride toward it through every terror, hastening.

Yet if some small need is presented to you,
And if a small need comes before you,
you send my messenger back, his effort thwarted and himself humbled.
You send my messenger back, unsuccessful in his effort and humbled.

If you are a man of justice, then we have appealed to one who is just;
So if you are just, we call you just;
and if you are a man of oppression, we have called you an oppressor.
And if you are unjust, we call you unjust.

منof الشعرpoetry لمnot يعدمlack منamong الناسpeople غادراa traitor
Even if you were like al-Naqqāsh in what you lack
Even if I were like al-Naqqash in what I lacked
of poetry, poetry would not lack among humankind someone to betray it.
Of poetry, there would still be no lack of a traitor among men.

Yet I have always been called, in the literal sense,
Yet I have always been called, literally—
or, if not, metaphorically—a poet before your verse.
Or else figuratively—a poet, before your poetry.

فرأيكso, your consideration فيregarding أنthat لاnot تعوقyou delay المسافراthe traveler
The Yemeni delegation has resolved to set out;
And the Yemeni delegation has resolved upon a journey;
so what say you to not hindering the traveler?
So see to it that you do not delay the traveler.
