Say to the most generous, consummate emir:

O best of those who listen to a speaker,

I swear by the House and those who have visited it

    on pilgrimage, barefoot and shod:

Had the lofty mountains borne what

you have borne upon your own shoulders,

they would have leaned upon Time; yet it

found in you no support that would bend.

How many tremors have struck your hearing,

shortening the arm-span of far-reaching hope!

You met them seeking God's reward, steadfast,

submitting to the decree that descended upon you,

until their darkness lifted from you,

    and truth triumphed over falsehood.

And God, in His kindness, will bring

more than lies in the hopeful one's hopes,

until the heart says in joy:

“The age of all-consuming care is gone.”

And now that your face has emerged from its cares,

hear the reproach of discerning courtesy.

Do not think, O Abu Fatik, that I

would tolerate a pouring raincloud's reminders of its favors.

But you are the patron with whom no

petitioner's disgrace rests on the one who asks him.

Nor, when he extends a noble hand,

does the giver's arrogance show in him.

And Eid has passed, and there has not come to me

the kindness and bounty I have grown used to.

So if this year of yours is drought-stricken,

then my affection for you is not barren.

And if you wish me to wait until next year,

I shall wait willingly until next year.

And may you rejoice in an Eid on which I received no visit

from your generosity, in drizzle or downpour.
