قد أتتني تلك اليد البيضاء

والأماني مصونة والرجاء

That white hand has indeed come to me,

While wishes and hope remain safeguarded:

منة لا يلوح من عليها

منة لا يلوح من عليها

وابتداء لا يبتديه ابتداء

وابتداء لا يبتديه ابتداء

A favor bearing no reminder of obligation,

And an initiative prompted by no prior initiative.

فتقبلتها وقبلت منها

فتقبلتها وقبلت منها

موضعاً مسه الندى والسخاء

موضعاً مسه الندى والسخاء

So I accepted it, and on it kissed

A spot touched by bounty and generosity.

وتخيرت في المكافأة عنها

وتخيرت في المكافأة عنها

فإذا خير ما ملكت الثناء

فإذا خير ما ملكت الثناء

And I chose with care how to repay it,

And behold, the best I possessed was praise.

فبعثت المديح يشكر عني

فبعثت المديح يشكر عني

منة ترك شكرها فحشاء

منة ترك شكرها فحشاء

So I sent praise to give thanks on my behalf

For a favor it would be shameful to leave unthanked.

وعلى أنني وإن كنت ممن

وعلى أنني وإن كنت ممن

تتحلى بشعره الجوزاء

تتحلى بشعره الجوزاء

And yet, though I am among those

With whose verse al-Jawza adorns herself,

فيد الشكر والمحامد أرض

فيد الشكر والمحامد أرض

ويد الفضل والجميل سماء

ويد الفضل والجميل سماء

The hand of gratitude and praise is the earth,

While the hand of bounty and kindness is the sky.
