أنهي إليك من خفي حالي

I report to you something of my hidden condition,

I confide to you my hidden state

and of matters that have eaten away at my mind.

أغصني الزمان بالزلال

أصبحت والشكوى لذي الجلال

أصبحت والشكوى لذي الجلال

Time has made me choke on pure water.

Time has choked me with disintegration

I have become—my complaint is to the Lord of Majesty,

I have become, and complain is to the Almighty

ثم إلى العصمة والثمال

ثم إلى العصمة والثمال

أبي علي كاشف الأهوال

أبي علي كاشف الأهوال

then to the safeguard and refuge,

Then to steadfastness and determination

Abu Ali, dispeller of terrors—

My father Ali, dispeller of terrors

أبا بنات وقليل المال

أبا بنات وقليل المال

لا أرقد الليل من السعال

لا أرقد الليل من السعال

a father of daughters, with little wealth.

A father of daughters and little money

I do not sleep at night because of coughing,

I do not sleep at night from coughing

مفكراً في كثرة العيال

مفكراً في كثرة العيال

وغفلة الأيام عن أمثالي

وغفلة الأيام عن أمثالي

thinking of my many dependents,

Thinking of many dependents

and the days' neglect of people like me.
