When he calls them, they heed his voice,

As graceful maidens heed a singer's voice.

Their restive ones spend the night gathered around him,

As maidens gather around a dead man whose loss brings grief.

And they have grown so fat that their pregnant she-camels seem

Overcome by lameness, though they are not lame.

Dwelling beside ʿAbd al-Madān—and whoever is

Their neighbor at al-Qahr is not eyed as prey.

A people who, when the dog fails to recognize its own household,

Protect their neighbor from every dreadful, crushing calamity.

And if the clans are driven off, their guest spends the night

In the best of circumstances, safe and not frightened.

Then, if alarmed, they fly to every gliding steed,

Strong in the short lower ribs, deep-ribbed and broad-chested,

And every high-gazing mare, long-bodied and gracefully built,

Kept close, broad-bodied, scant of forelock, swift-running.

They come bearing the horsemen of dawn, grim-faced,

Marked, galloping with every helmeted warrior.
