وَأَنكَرَهُand found him unfamiliar مِمّاbecause of what اِستَفَادَhe acquired حَلائِلُهhis wives
His heart sobered, and today his folly ceased.
His heart awoke, and the useless part of his day grew short,
And his wives found him unfamiliar because of what he had acquired.
And he denied it because of what its situation had brought on him.
يُرَبنَthey are uneasy وَيَعرِفنَand they know القَوامَthe stature وَشيمَتيand my character

They are uneasy, though they know my stature and my character,
He would blame and recognize the demeanor and my manner,
And they found the change in my head strange, with gray hair covering it.
And deny the bending of the head and the hoariness that encompassed it.
وَكُنتُand I was كَماas يَعلَمنَthey know وَالدَهرُand time صَالِحٌfavorable

And I was, as they know—when times were good—
And I was as they knew, and time was good,
Like the breast of a Yemeni sword, burnished clean by its polishers.
As the chest of a Yemeni its scabbards had purified.
وَأَصبَحتُand I have become قَدindeed عَنَّفتُI rebuked بِالجَهلِfor folly أَهلَهُits practitioners

And now I have rebuked the foolish for their folly,
And I became one who had chastised ignorance and its people,
And the horses of youth and its riding camels have been unsaddled.
As the horses of youth grew up and their dams carried them.
قَليلٌlight عِنانيmy rein مَنwhoever أَتىcame مُتَعَمِّداًdeliberately
سَواءًon equal terms بِناwith us أَوor خالَفَتنيdiffered from me شَمائِلُهhis dispositions
My rein is light for whoever comes in earnest,
There are few who restrain me, whoever comes to me deliberately,
Whether on equal terms with us or unlike me in his ways.
Whether they were with me or their qualities opposed me.
خَلاexcept أَنَّنيthat I قَدindeed لاnot أَقولُI say لِمُدبِرٍto one turning away

But I do not ask one who turns away,
Except that I may not say to one who turns away,
When he chooses to cut the cord, 'Will you join it again?'
If he chooses the rope’s edge, “Are you its connector?”
تَبَصَّرlook closely خَليليmy friend هَلwhether تَرىyou see مِنany ظَعائِنٍcamel litters

Look closely, my friend: do you see any camel litters
Look, my friend - do you see any dirty women
Setting forth, their cherished women like wild cows?
Who have borne the likes of sheep and their pregnant ones?
ظَعائِنُcamel litters أَبرَقنَthey sighted lightning الخَريفَthe autumn rain وَشِمنَهُand watched it

Litters whose women sighted autumn lightning and watched it,
Dirty women who glisten in autumn and fatten themselves,
And feared the mighty lord, lest his squadrons be led forth
And their spirits diminish that they are led by bridles.

On the trail of a tribe that never sees the star rising
Following a living being who does not see a star rising
At night without its camps lying out in the open.
From the night, unless it is passing and its stages disappear.
شَرِبنَthey drank بِعُكّاشِat Ukkash الهَبابيدِal-Hababid شَربَةًa draught

They drank a draught at Ukkash al-Hababid,
They drank from the wine-skin of darting gazelles a drink,
And al-Ahfa had been their companion, from which they were parting.
And the most delicious to it was its mixture they kept pace with.
فَلَمّاthen when بَدَاappeared دَمخٌDamkh وَأَعرَضَand spread broad دونَهُbefore it

And when Damkh appeared, and before it stretched
So when the darkness appeared and they turned away from it,
Isolated sand dunes whose flanks gleamed,
Phantoms in the sand, their spears glisten.
وَقُلنَand they said أَلاsurely البَردِيُّal-Bardi أَوَّلُthe first مَشرَبٍwatering place

They said, 'Surely al-Bardi is the first watering place?'
And they said, “Is not the coolness the first drinking place,
'Yes, indeed—if its lower reaches are full of water.'
Yes, neighbors, if its depths were remedies.”
تَحاثَثنَthey urged one another وَاِستَعجَلنَand they hurried كُلَّevery مُواشِكٍfleet camel

They urged one another and hurried every fleet camel,
They packed up and hastened every impending one
Fully formed, its canine tooth only just erupted.
With his goods, no longer caring if his strap would tear.
فَباكَرنَso they came at dawn جَوناًa dark pool لِلعَلاجيمِfor the frogs فَوقَهُupon it
مَجالِسُresting places غَرقَىsubmerged لاnot يُحَلَّأُis driven away ناهِلُهits drinker
So at dawn they reached a dark pool; the frogs had upon it
They hurried the ignorant before daybreak, and on top of him
Submerged resting places, and no drinker was driven away.
Were assemblies of the drowned, which their bucket could not scoop up.
إِذاwhen ماever أَتَتهُcame to it الريحُthe wind مِنfrom شَطرِthe direction of جانِبٍone side

Whenever the wind came to it from one side
Whenever the wind came to him from the direction of a side,
Toward another, its eddies gathered the dust.
To a side, it carried the dust, interfering with it.
قَذَفنَthey hurled بِفيinto the mouth of مَنwhoever ساءَهُنَoffended them بِصَخرَةٍwith a rock

وَذُمَّand was scorned نَجيلُthe grass of الرُمَّتَينِal-Rummatayn وَناصِلُهand its withered growth
They hurled a rock into the mouth of whoever had offended them,
They threw a rock at whoever of them angered them
And the grass of al-Rummatayn and its withered growth were scorned.
And blamed the hurler and its sender.
