Have you not seen al-Harish on the plain of Badr,
challenging us when the contest had grown fierce?
إِذاwhenever خَفَضواthey slacken رَفَعتُI raise لَهُمُfor them عَصاهُمtheir staff
إِذا خَفَضوا رَفَعتُ لَهُمُ عَصاهُم
كَماjust as يُخشىis feared عَلىfor الشُمُسِthe restive horses النَفارُbolting
كَما يُخشى عَلى الشُمُسِ النَفارُ
Whenever they slacken, I raise their staff for them,
as one fears that restive horses may bolt.
فَإِنّيfor indeed I فيamong بَنيthe sons of كَعبٍKa'b لَصِهرٌindeed a kinsman by marriage
فَإِنّي في بَني كَعبٍ لَصِهرٌ
وَجارٌand a neighbor بَعدُbesides إِنif نَفَعَavails الجِوارُneighborly protection
وَجارٌ بَعدُ إِن نَفَعَ الجِوارُ
For I am indeed an in-law among Banu Ka'b,
and a neighbor besides, if neighborly protection avails.

Perhaps you, because of my love for Kilab,
harbor a grudge with a lair within it.

And many a favor belongs to Banu Kilab,
whose fragrance is like perfume freshly unsealed.

And the bounty that lay with Banu Kilab—
they lent it, and returned what they borrowed.
