غُزُلٌ تَناوَحُ أَن تَهُبَّ شَمالُ
By your father Khayr, Muhammad’s camels indeed
By your father's goodness, the camels of Muhammad
Are lovesick, wailing to one another when a north wind blows.
Are young she-camels that yearn to roam northwards,
وَإِذاand when رَأَينَthey see لَدىbeside الفِناءِthe courtyard غَريبَةًa strange she-camel
وَإِذا رَأَينَ لَدى الفِناءِ غَريبَةً

فاضَت لَهُنَّ مِن الدُموعِ سِجالُ
And when they see a strange she-camel beside the courtyard,
And when they see a stranger by the enclosure,
Their tears flow in torrents.
Tears of longing flow copiously from them,
وَتَرىand you see لَهاfor them حَدَّthe harshest point of الشِتاءِwinter عَلىon الثَرىthe damp earth

رَخماً وَما تَحيا لُهنَّ فِصالُ
And at winter’s harshest, on the damp earth, you see around them
And you see them in winter imprint the soil
Vultures; none of their calves survive.
With their pads, though no summer awaits them.
