جَزىmay reward اللَهُGod عَوفاًʿAwf مِنamong مَواليallies of جَنابَةٍJanābah
وَنَكراءَand Nakrāʾ خَيراًwith good كُلُّevery جَارٍneighbor مُوَدَّعُbid farewell
May God reward ʿAwf, among the allies of Janābah
May God repay 'Auf among the generous with nobility
and Nakrāʾ, with good; every neighbor is bid farewell.
And ingratitude with good - each neighbor takes leave.
أَباحواthey made available لَناto us قَوّاًQaww فَرَملَةَthen the sands of عالِجٍʿĀlij
وَخَبتاًand Khabt وَهَلand is ...? خَبتٌKhabt لَناfor us مُتَرَبَّعُa spring pasture
They opened Qaww to us, then the sands of ʿĀlij,
They allowed us the tribe and plains of 'Alij
and Khabt—is Khabt a spring pasture for us?
And Khabat; is there a Khabat owned by us with pillars?
نَشُقُّwe cleave through الِعهادَrain-fed pastures الحُوَّdark green لَمnot تُرعَwere grazed قَبلَناbefore us
كَماas شُقَّwas sliced بِالموسىwith a razor السَنامُthe hump المُقَلَّعُsevered
We cleave through dark-green, rain-fed pastures, ungrazed before us,
We split well-knit pacts - they were not obeyed before us -
as a severed hump is sliced with a razor.
As a constitution is split with a drawn sword.
إِذاwhen فَزِعواthey took alarm طارواthey flew بِجَنبَيon both sides of لِوائِهِمtheir banner

When they take alarm, they fly on either side of their banner,
When they were terrified, they flew by the sides of their banners
in their thousands, with cavalry standards and horses held in check.
In thousands and troops of horse that bolted.
وَقَدand already عَلِمواthey knew أَنّاthat we سَنأَتيwe shall come دِيارَناour homes
فَيَرعَونَso they pasture أَجوازَthe central reaches of العِراقِIraq ونَرفَعُand we hasten onward
And they knew that we would return to our homes,
They knew we'd go to our lands,
so they pasture Iraq's heartlands, while we hasten onward.
So they watched over Iraq's passages, and we rose high.
وَقَدand indeed حاذَرواthey were wary of ماwhat الجارُthe neighbor وَالضَيفُand the guest مُخبِرٌwould report
إِذاwhen فارَقاthe two departed كُلٌّeach بِذَلِكَabout that مولَعُeager
And they were wary of what the neighbor and guest would report
They were cautious of what the neighbor and guest tell
when both depart; each is eager to tell of it.
When each parts - for that he has passion.

Nor do I find parting strange; indeed, I
I am not one who denies separation; I
was long ago bereft of neighbors at Dhū Laṭaf.
Have long been aggrieved by those of gentle neighborhood.
جَديراًfittingly بِهِمfor them مِنfrom كُلِّevery حَيٍّtribe أَلِفتُهُمI befriended them
إِذاwhenever أَنَسٌcompanions عَزُّواbecame dear عَلَيَّto me تَصَدَّعواthey scattered
As might be expected of them—those I befriended from every tribe—
I am worthy of them - wherever I settled I befriended them;
whenever companions grew dear to me, they scattered.
When I had comrades they consoled me and cracked apart.

And whenever I dwelt as a neighbor, I would fasten to the heights
When I dwelled I embedded my hands in the abodes,
my two hands; no place was found for my side to fall.
And no destruction was found at my side.

I see my camels are not driven, cringing, from water,
I see my camels - they do not flinch from the meadows out of fear
when folk under neighborly protection are chased off and scattered.
When a people in the neighborhood became addled and clamored,

They watch the oryx in the wilderness, until it seems
The animals graze the pasture, until it is as if
they take fright whenever they glimpse a human figure.
When they spied a human form, they startled.

Matching, alike in form, they turn toward a bite-scarred bull,
The likes and equivalents of them pasture for a tender one
when he pours a repeated bellow into his mottled throat-sac.
When he pours onto a dusty ground, turning them back.

Chestnut-colored, like a door-post; his daughters were kept alive
Like the chicks of the Kumiya at the door of the tent -
by their calf-losing dams, and Iṣbaʿ had made them conceive.
Their bleating and he carries them with his finger.

My small camel-herds graze in spring and are not at all frightened
My young camels lounge about - nothing startles them
by any alarm when the tribes scatter across the sands.
When the settlements in the sands take fright.

Banu Saʿd and the sharp points of their spears protected them;
The clan of Sa'd protected them, and the sharpness of their spears,
a stony rise and a bare sandy tract at the valley-bend lay vacant for them.
And left them alone in fright - a skull and foreleg.

And they have grown so fat that their pregnant she-camels seem
They grew fat until their birthing is like
a builder's towers, plastered with clay and raised high.
The wrangling of a builder, twisting and rising up.

They dread the easy road, imagining it
They dread the easy road - thinking it
rugged ground and perilous pits, though it is a bare, empty desert plain.
Rugged, muddy, when it is open and desolate.

When the sluggish shepherd drives them, you would take them
When the wealthy herder drives them, you would think them
for an Iraqi's heavily laden riding-camels being urged onward,
Steeds of an Iraqi, spirited and ridden.

Of milk, until every joint
pendulous folds like water-buckets, swaying to and fro.
Was caked - like chunks carried on camels.
