سَفَهاًin folly فَغُصَّso choke مِنَfrom العِنانِthe rein قَليلاa little
Your high stations have bolted with you in their frenzy,
The ignorances have emboldened you in their passions,
In folly—so choke a little on the rein.
So you have become a little unrestrained.
وَاِحذَرand beware لَواذِعَstinging barbs قائِلٍa speaker مُتَغَطرِفٍoverbearing
أَمسىhas become يَسُنُّsharpens لِسانَهُhis tongue لِيَقولاso he may speak
And beware the stinging barbs of an overbearing speaker,
And beware the utterances of a pretentious speaker
Who now whets his tongue to speak
Who has made it his habit at night to unleash his tongue,
بِفَواقِرٍwith back-breaking blows تَدَعُleave الرُؤوسَthe heads أَميمَةًwounded to the brain
وَقَوارِعٍand battering blows تَدَعُleave العَزيزَthe mighty ذَليلاabased
With back-breaking blows that leave heads wounded to the brain,
With empty words that make the heads dejected,
And battering blows that leave the mighty abased.
And falsehoods that make the dear ones humiliated.
قَدalready كانَwas عِرضُكَyour honor فيin الصِوانِthe protective case بِطَيِّهِwith it folded
فَلَئِنbut if indeed أَبَيتَyou refuse لَيَغدُوَنit will surely become مَبذولاexposed
Your honor had been kept in its case, folded away;
Your honor was protected in its sheath,
But if you refuse, it shall surely be laid bare.
But if you refuse, they will make it exposed.
إِنَّindeed العُبابَthe surging flood إِذاwhen تَغَطغَطَchurns أَوor طَمىrises high
جَعَلَmakes الجِبالَthe mountains وَإِنeven though عَلَونَthey rise high مَسيلاa watercourse
Indeed, when the surging flood churns or rises,
Verily when the floods rise and overflow,
It makes the mountains, however high, a watercourse.
They make even the towering mountains a watercourse.
