You two, convey a message from me to al-Husayn:
Convey my greetings to Hussein though far,
Truly, this mountain has sunk since you last knew it.
After you left, loneliness prevail Mount Ohod so bleak.

And the flame whose blaze you warmed yourself by—
The meteor whose light you sought,
calamities turned back its light, so it died out.
Its glow reversed by calamities so dark.

The towering phoenix armed with might,

Laid barren by time without a mark.

If you reach the turbid watering-place while he is content,
If you come to the valley serene at peace,
it is because he drinks water clear and pure.
For what the brisk ripples once evoke.

And the hooked-beaked eagle was brought down by the crag,
The ferocious eagle brought down in defeat,
though she had lent the stars her ear.
After the stars in the sky it bespoke.

Death snatched her from us, and yet
Death hastened and took you away from us,
she left fledglings in our homes.
But in our dwellings it left your flock.

And after you turned old and meek,
as a youth, after it had grown old.
Upon that time returned a lad so slick.
