خُضتُI plunged الغِمارَthe depths فَجازَso crossed جُمَّتَهاtheir crest
دونيover me وَطَبَّقَand covered ثَوبِيَmy garment البَلَلُwetness
I plunged into the depths; the crest of their flood
passed over me, and wetness covered my garment.
وَمُذَكِّريand one reminding me رَحِماًof kinship مُعَنَّسَةًlong neglected
كَالشَمسِlike the sun أَخلَقَwore away ضَوءَهاits light الطَفَلُthe late hour
And one reminds me of a kinship long neglected,
like the sun whose light the late hour has worn away:
رَحِمٌkinship تَعَلَّقُclings بِالبَعيدِto the distant one كَماjust as
عَلِقَclings to الحِباءَthe tent النازِحُthe far-stretched الطُوَلُlong rope
a kinship that clings to the distant one, just as
the long, far-stretched rope clings to the tent.
اِثنانِtwo يَقتَطِعانِthey cut away مِنfrom فُرَصيmy opportunities
وَأَناand I الَّذيthe one who أُرخيI give rein وَأَهتَبِلُand seize the chance
Two claimants cut away portions of my opportunities,
while I am the one who gives rein and seizes the chance.
غَرَضيmy purpose بِمَدحِكَin praising you أَنthat يُطاوِعَنيobey me
عِوَجٌcrookedness بِأَيّاميin my days وَيَعتَدِلُand straighten
My purpose in praising you is that
the crookedness in my days obey me and straighten.
وَأَقومُand I stand بَينَbetween يَدَيكَyour two hands مُرتَجِلاًimprovising
لاneither العَيُّinarticulacy يَقطَعُنيcuts me off وَلاnor الخَطَلُwild error
I stand before you, improvising;
neither speechlessness cuts me off nor wild error.
وَلَئِنand though نَماgrew كُلُّall المَديحِpanegyric إِلىback to

And though all panegyric traces its growth back to
the spontaneous turns of my speech, and love poetry claims descent,
فَالأَرضُfor the earth أُمُّmother التُربِof soil أَجمَعِهِall of it
وَأَبوand the father البَريَّةِof humankind كُلِّهاall of it رَجُلُone man
the earth is mother of all soil,
and the father of all humankind is one man.
