Who has seen the lightning in the lowlands of al-Sanad,
Whoever saw lightning in my beloved Syria
cleaving the skin of night and blazing?

A lamp's wavering, tossed by the east wind,
The lamp's confusion makes the breeze exhilarate,
amid the darkness, dimming and flaring.
Glimmering through the darkness, kindling,

Whenever lofty Syria comes to my mind,
longing rose and sank within my heart.
Yearning rises in my heart and sits down.

How much has lightning illuminated for me places of love,
where the eye's tears melted and froze;
My tears melted there and froze.

Whenever the memory of her returns to my heart,
tears played upon my eyelids, then grew earnest.
Tears play with my eyelids and roll down.

The herd's white gazelle has brought heartache near me,
Indeed, the flock's shepherd brought me closest to passion
and carried patience and endurance far from me.
And patience kept away from me, and composure.

With the freshness of two boughs—a bough and a sand dune—
With the dew of two branches, a branch and a sapling,
and the harvest of two sweet things—honey and hail.
And the harvest of two sweets, honey and cold water.

Say to the flowers of old age, welcome,
has taken away error and given me sound judgment.
It took misguidance and gave me wisdom.

after long crookedness had left it weakened.
After being soaked in excessive love.

And today he bowed his unruly head,
long he strayed as he would, then took the straight path.
Moving away from the excesses of the past.

The brilliant remained shining after being illuminated for a time,
after it had flashed a while and thundered.
After it flashed and rumbled.

And delusion - its name is today and tomorrow.
