When I say that nearness heals the anguish of love,

my heart insists on yearning all the more.

And if I inwardly resolve to forget, there return

natural impulses of longing that undo pretense.

And many a night renews my passion,

when the Yemeni lightning flashes toward Syria and Iraq.

I coax my gaze lest its sharp point linger

upon you, and forbid my tears to well up,

for fear of a tale-bearer whose words might mar love.

But far from it! Our love has grown tall and put forth leaves.

We went forth against our enemies, defending a bond of love,

and keeping its edges from being torn apart.

So you are but the arrow that greeted his mouth,

and I but the keen sword that struck a head's crown.

If you are my close friend, all I need of humankind

is that you live on; but for you, I would not live long.

We have been brought together, so we care not what passion has done,

and we feared that, with the passing days, we might part.
