إِذاwhen ضافَنيvisits me هَمٌّa care أَمَلُّI weary of طُروقَهُits coming by night
بِبَعضِon some of اللَياليthe nights أَوor أَضيقُI feel constricted بِهِby it صَدراin my breast
When care visits me and I weary of its coming by night
on certain nights, or my breast grows tight with it,
وَلَمand not أَرَI find ليfor myself ماanything that يَطرُدُdispels الهَمَّcare مِثلَهُlike it
سَماعاًmusic يُجَلّيclears عَنfrom ضَميرٍa heart وَلاnor خَمراwine
and I find nothing to dispel such care—
neither music to clear the heart nor wine—
أَقولُI say لِنَدمانَيَّto my two boon companions كُرّاreturn, you two إِلىto المُنىdreams
وَذِكرِand remembrance of التَصابيyouthful dalliance وَاِندُباand mourn, you two ذَلِكَthat العَصراage
I tell my two boon companions: “Return to dreams
and memories of youthful dalliance, and mourn that age.
فَقَدfor indeed طالَoften (with ما) ماa verbal-noun particle أَحدَثتُI renewed عَهداًa bond بِطيبَةٍwith Taybah
فَرُدّاso repeat, you two عَلَيَّto me القَولَthe tale أُحدِثI may renew بِهِthrough it ذِكراa memory
For often have I renewed my bond with Taybah;
so repeat the tale to me, that through it I may renew remembrance.
فَماfor not كانَit was إِلّاexcept خِلسَةًa stolen moment ثُمَّthen إِنَّنيindeed I
رَأَيتُI found يَديmy hand مِمّاof what عَلِقتُI had clung بِهِto it صِفراًempty
For it was only a stolen moment; then I
found my hand empty of what I had clung to.”
