Were you not with the tribe

one morning, when we turned away?

And Glory had cried out to us:

    "Where to? Where to?"

    Until the bloodline was recognized,

so we returned, then joined battle.

We were fired by zeal for honor,

so we exchanged blows and defended.

So do not ask about the cup

from which we plied one another with drink.

We wounded one another; then, when

the affair overwhelmed us, we wept together.

Out of forbearance we kept one another apart,

    and with rancor we met.

And but for the groaning of kinship

bonds, we would have done our utmost and proved our mettle.

    When kinship pleaded,

we spared one another and spared lives.

Sons of our uncles, hold back:

the gap between our two homes will widen.

And the dust of battle will become

a weld between our two armies,

    when the dust pitches

    our two canopies over battle.

May ties of kinship restrain us

    if we wrong one another.

Test one another, to face us,

for we have already tested one another.

So the tester found among us

neither a trembling coward nor a weakling.

    Among us, every youth's concern

    is to meet his doom.

He seems to be fulfilling a vow

    thereby, or discharging a debt.

    Keen of hearing wherever

    the ear becomes the eye.

A snatch of sleep clears away

the rust from the fiery one's eyes,

when the march has shod the forelegs of

the riding camels with blood and weariness.

    O necklace-wearer, revealing within

    it one gleaming-necked and tender,

stop, and I shall tell you of my endurance

when you threaten me with separation.

    About the sword's nature, ask

the tribe's brave man, not the smith.

Ours is the lead, with feet

on which we raced each other toward glory.

You see the roaring of lions

as a whisper between our two thickets.

    When oppression bargains with us

for our honor, we drive the price high.

And if justice contends with us

for wealth's reins, we cast them aside.

When the weary depart at evening,

    we give, and provide mounts.

The seeker of gifts thinks that we

    have agreed together on generosity.

We controlled the allotment of sustenance,

    so we impoverished and enriched.

    And we secured Time's obedience,

    so we angered and appeased.

    Whenever generosity will not obey,

we give freely, or make ourselves give.

Swiftly, then, we lost one another,

all of us, and announced one another's deaths.

When the caller repeats his summons

    to death, we rally together.

Nor will it ever help us

if we try to evade death.

And how well we know that we

    have raced toward the finish!
