نُظِمناwe were strung together نِظامَlike the stringing of العِقدِthe necklace وُدّاًaffection وَأُلفَةًand fellowship
نُظِمنا نِظامَ العِقدِ وُدّاً وَأُلفَةً
وَكانَand was لَناfor us البَتِّيُّal-Batti سِلكَthe thread of نِظامِstringing
وَكانَ لَنا البَتِّيُّ سِلكَ نِظامِ
We were strung like a necklace in affection and fellowship,
We have organized our bond with affection and friendship
and al-Batti was the thread that held us together:
And Al-Battiy has strung together our system of pearls
أَخيmy brother وَاِبنُand the son of عَمّيmy paternal uncle وَاِبنُand the son of حَمدٍHamd فَإِنَّهُfor he is
أَخي وَاِبنُ عَمّي وَاِبنُ حَمدٍ فَإِنَّهُ
تَباريحُthe torments of قَلبيmy heart خاّلِياًin solitude وَغَراميand my consuming passion
تَباريحُ قَلبي خاّلِياً وَغَرامي
my brother, my paternal cousin, and Ibn Hamd—for he is
My brother, cousin, and son of Hamad - he is
my heart’s anguish in solitude and my consuming passion.
The delight of my heart, my intimate friend, and my love
وَسادِسُناand our sixth الأَزدِيُّal-Azdi ماwhatever شِئتَyou wish مِنof أَبٍa father
وَسادِسُنا الأَزدِيُّ ما شِئتَ مِن أَبٍ
جَوادٍgenerous وَمِنand of جَدٍّأَغَرَّan illustrious grandfather هُمامِmagnanimous
جَوادٍ وَمِن جَدٍّأَغَرَّ هُمامِ
And our sixth is al-Azdi, with a father as fine as you could wish,
And our sixth, the Azdi - whatever father you wish
generous, and a grandfather illustrious and magnanimous.
Generous and of noble ancestry - has inspired ambition
أَحاديثُconversations تَستَدعيsummon الوَقورَthe dignified man إِلىto الصِباyouth
أَحاديثُ تَستَدعي الوَقورَ إِلى الصِبا
وَتَكسوand clothe حَليمَthe forbearing man of القَومِthe company ثَوبَa robe of عُرامِunruliness
وَتَكسو حَليمَ القَومِ ثَوبَ عُرامِ
Conversations that summon the dignified man to youth,
Our conversations invite dignity to youthfulness
and clothe the company’s forbearing man in a robe of unruliness.
And dress the wise one of the people in the garb of nudity
فَنُضحيso at morning we are لَهاbecause of them طَربىenraptured بِغَيرِwithout تَرَنُّمٍsinging
فَنُضحي لَها طَربى بِغَيرِ تَرَنُّمٍ
وَنُمسيand at evening we are لَهاbecause of them سَكرىdrunk بِغَيرِwithout مُدامِwine
وَنُمسي لَها سَكرى بِغَيرِ مُدامِ
So at morning we are enraptured by them, without singing,
So we sacrifice the morning for it without singing
and at evening we are drunk on them, without wine.
And we intoxicate ourselves for it without wine
تَعالَواcome نُوَلِّlet us offer اللائِمينَthe reproachers تَصامُماًfeigned deafness
تَعالَوا نُوَلِّ اللائِمينَ تَصامُماً
وَنَعصِand let us defy عَلىthroughout الأَيّامِthe days كُلَّevery مُلامِreproach
وَنَعصِ عَلى الأَيّامِ كُلَّ مُلامِ
Come, let us turn a deaf ear to the reproachers,
Come let us oppose the blamers with determination
and defy every reproach throughout our days.
And rebel against the days and all faultfinders
وَنَغتَنِمِand let us seize الأَوقاتَthe moments إِنَّindeed بَقاءَهاtheir duration
وَنَغتَنِمِ الأَوقاتَ إِنَّ بَقاءَها
كَمَرِّlike the passing of غَمامٍclouds أَوor كَحِلمِlike a dream مَنامِsleep
كَمَرِّ غَمامٍ أَو كَحِلمِ مَنامِ
And let us seize the moments, for their duration
And let us seize the moments - their remaining
is like the passing of clouds, or a dream in sleep.
Is like the passing of clouds or a dream's fantasy
مِنَfrom اللَهِGod أَستَبقيI seek to preserve صَفاءًharmony يَضُمُّناthat unites us
مِنَ اللَهِ أَستَبقي صَفاءً يَضُمُّنا
وَطاعَةَand the obedience of أَيّامٍdays وَدارِand of an abode of مُقامِresidence
وَطاعَةَ أَيّامٍ وَدارِ مُقامِ
I ask God to preserve the harmony that unites us,
From God I seek to maintain a serenity that unites us
and days and a settled home that do our bidding.
And obedience to the days and an abode of settlement
وَأَستَصرِفُand I ask to turn away الأَعداءَthe enemies عَنّاfrom us فَإِنَّناfor we
وَأَستَصرِفُ الأَعداءَ عَنّا فَإِنَّنا
مُذُsince اليَومِtoday أَغراضٌtargets لِكُلِّfor every مَرامِaim
مُذُ اليَومِ أَغراضٌ لِكُلِّ مَرامِ
And I ask Him to turn our enemies away from us, for we are,
And I divert the enemies from us, for we
from this day on, targets for every aim.
Henceforth are the goal of every purpose
