بِأَرضِin the soil of العُلىeminence وَاِختَلَطناand we mingled رُغاماas dust
We sprouted together, our roots meeting
In the land of glory and our bits mixed
in the soil of eminence, our dust mingling.
When glory covers your foreheads
إِذاwhen عَمَّمَturbaned المَجدُglory هاماتِكُمyour heads
كَفانِيَit sufficed me لَوثاًa wrapping بِهِin it وَاِعتِماماand wearing a turban
When glory wraps turbans around your heads,
It sufficed me for branding and blinding
it suffices to wrap and turban me in it.
If my persona is other than you
لَئِنeven if كانَis شَخصِيَmy person فيamong غَيرِكُمothers
فَإِنَّthen surely لِقَلبِيَfor my heart فيكُمamong you مَقاماa dwelling
Even if my person is among others,
Then my heart indeed has a place with you
my heart surely has a dwelling among you.
And my tongue is for you and praise
وَإِنَّand surely لِسانيmy tongue لَكُمis yours وَالثَناءَand praise
وَإِنَّand surely وُلوعيmy devotion بِكُمis to you وَالغَراماand ardent love
My tongue and praise are surely yours,
And my passion and love for you
and my devotion and ardent love are for you.
I was once driving away kings
وَكُنتُand I was زَماناًfor a time أَذودُdriving away المُلوكَkings
عَنِfrom السِلكِthe thread رَقرَقتَyou made shimmer فيهِupon it النِظاماthe strung pearls
And for a time I drove kings away
From the path—order glistened in it
from the thread on which you made the strung pearls shimmer.
I wanted nobility, not gifts
أُريدُI seek الكَرامَةَhonor لاnot المَكرُماتِgenerous favors
وَنَيلَand attaining العُلىeminence لاnot العَطاياgifts الجِساماlavish
I seek honor, not generous favors,
And reaching heights, not bounties or bodies
and the attainment of heights, not lavish gifts.
So keep the dear ones away from my mind
فَحوزواso claim العَقائِلَthe noble maidens عَنfrom خاطِريmy imagination
إِلىuntil ماwhen? أُماطِلُI keep delaying عَنهاover them إِلىuntil ماwhen?
So claim the noble maidens from my imagination;
To what I avert it, to what
how long must I put them off—how long?
My reproach has been long against one who saw
لَقَدindeed طالَhas lasted long عَتبيmy reproach عَلىagainst ناظِرٍan eye
رَأىsaw بارِقاًlightning غَيرَnot دانٍnear فَشاماand watched it
Long have I reproached an eye
A shining light other than yielding or Hashim
that saw far-off lightning and watched it.
How much do I renew my love for you
إِلىuntil كَمhow long أُجَدِّدُshall I renew وَجديmy yearning بِكُمfor you
وَأَعلَقُand cling to مِنكُمfrom you حِبالاًropes رِماماdecaying
How long shall I renew my yearning for you
And fasten ropes from you, frayed
and cling to decaying cords from you?
I multiply its knots again
أَزيدُI increase مَعاقِدَهاtheir knots مِرَّةًin strength
وَتَأبىand refuse العَلائِقُthe bonds إِلّاanything but اِنجِذاماbeing severed
I give their knots greater strength,
But bonds refuse except bursting
yet the bonds insist on being severed.
And I seek refuge in you from my love returning
وَإِنّيand I أَعوذُseek refuge بِكُمin you أَنlest يَعودَturn
حُبابيmy love قِلىًto aversion وَثَنائيand my praise مَلاماto blame
I seek refuge in you lest
Withered and my praise regretted
my love turn to aversion, and my praise to blame.
Is there then one clapping to sell Iraq
فَهَلso is there صافِقٌa trader فَأَبيعَso I may sell العِراIraq (continued)
قَcompletion of 'Iraq' غَيرَnot غَبينٍcheated وَأَشريand buy الشَآماal-Sham
Is there a trader, then, so I may sell Iraq
Other than stupid and buy Damascus?
without being cheated, and buy al-Sham,
When I do not visit the place of the noble
إِذاif لَمnot أَزُرI visit مَطلَعَthe rising-place of المَكرُماnoble deeds (continued)
تِcompletion of 'noble deeds' قَدalready أَخَذَhas begun البَدرُthe full moon فيهِin it التَماماfullness
unless I visit the rising-place of noble deeds,
The full moon has taken over it
where the full moon has begun to attain perfection,
I would cloak myself in that majesty
فَأُلبِسُthen I clothe عِطفَيَّmy shoulders ذاكَthat الجَلالَmajesty
وَأورِدُand bring to drink عَينَيَّmy eyes ذاكَthat الهُماماheroic lord
to clothe my shoulders in that majesty
And make my eyes attain that resolve
and bring my eyes to drink in that heroic lord?
How little do I care for speeches after it
فَماso not أَحفِلُI heed الخَطبَcalamity مِنfrom بَعدِهاafter it
إِذاwhen جَلَّit grows great بَلrather لاnot أُباليI care about الحِماماdeath
Afterward, I shall heed no calamity,
When it appears! Rather, I do not care for pigeons
however great—no, I shall not even heed death.
Will the curiosities be watered from your river
أَتُروىare they watered? الغَرائِبُthe stranger camels مِنat وِردِكُمyour watering-place
وَذَوديand my small camel herd عَلىon جانِبَيهِits two sides يُظامىis kept thirsty
Are strangers' camels watered at your watering-place,
While my poetic compositions on its banks are protected?
while my small herd at its edges is kept thirsty?
So do not deny a castle whose owner
فَلاso do not تُنكِرواdisapprove of قُلعَةًa departure مِنby فَتىًa young man
أَقامَwho remained عَلىthrough مَطلِكُمyour procrastination ماas long as أَقاماhe remained
Do not, then, begrudge a young man his departure,
Stayed facing your horizon as long as he stayed
after he has stayed, enduring your delay, as long as he has.
Greetings! If there is no meeting
سَلامٌpeace إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنthere is لُقيَةٌa meeting
وَإِنَّand surely يَداًa favor أَنthat تَرُدّواyou return السَلاماthe greeting of peace
Peace, if there can be no meeting;
And a hand if you repel the greetings!
and to return the greeting of peace is surely a favor.
