The searing pangs of longing miss them and strike me mortally.

Blame in love restrains them, but entices me.

    لَكِنَّهُم سَلِموا مِمّا يُعَنّيني

    Had they suffered some of what I suffer, I would have rejoiced in them;

but they were spared what torments me.

    عَلِقتُ مِنها بِوَعدٍ غَيرِ مَضمونِ

    At the sandhill, toward the valley bends, dwells a woman;

I clung to a promise from her, not guaranteed.

They have not let me taste cool water since they forbade

me the coolness of dusky lips, while longing makes me thirsty.

O growing-ground of wormwood and buttercups in Yemen,

I greeted within you a gazelle who does not greet me.

I wonder: has the debtor whom I have so long pursued

been enriched in the encampment since I left, so that he might repay me?

Indeed, the carefree one, that morning at the valley bend, was brought back

to the inward state of a heart-tormented, spellbound man.

Had unadorned gazelles not crossed our path,

he would not have forgotten reason and faith.

He had almost escaped through the earnest force of his resolve,

but the eyes of the wide-eyed antelope herd waylaid him.

The water of al-Nuqayb, even enough to rinse my mouth,

is a cure for my yearning—and something other than water heals me.

And a breath of the ben-tree breeze, whose fragrance suffuses

a wing of night, courses through the nostrils.

I am given my tears to drink whenever, at night in darkness,

the creaking tamarisks at Darayya sing to me.

And many a companion, his head stunned by drowsiness—

I called to him while night's canopy sheltered me.

He rose, a heaviness already gurgling in his head,

reluctantly carrying out my command or answering my call.

May your people not be deceived! How often sleep upon rancor

is sickness, even with a keen, sharpened blade.

And camels beating their jaws at Aḍam,

worn out, lean as palm stalks.

The long distance wore out their reins, and they ended up

with sore feet, some hobbled, some haltered.

Their eye-corners brimmed with tears whenever they saw

lightning illuminate the fringes of white clouds and dark.

Far is Babylon from Najd! How distant have grown

for the mounts the reaches of that separation.

Ask me of yearning: with every sunrise,

longing feathers me, while the days whittle me down.

Who can give me bare subsistence, with nothing to spare,

to shield me from the world's grit and suffice me?

Dear brother, whoever sells his world and its glitter

to safeguard his dignity has made no losing bargain, in my eyes.

They said, 'Are you content with the low and base?' Yet I was not

content with the low; rather, I was forced to accept the low.

When we conjecture and calculate, fate runs its course,

bringing a calamity neither imagined nor anticipated.

Marvel at the endurance of a soul after it has been struck

    by calamities, virgin and mature alike;

and at my escape on the day of the house, when

another fell, while I lacked no resolve to save me.

I darted out of it like a star plunging downward,

though death's door-leaves had met before me.

I was the first to scale its mountain pass,

with evil behind me that could not be trusted.

After the lord of the kingdom had smiled

at me, I approached him in private counsel, and he drew me near.

    لَقَد تَقارَبَ بَينَ العِزِّ وَالهَونِ

    By evening I pitied the man I had envied in the morning;

how close glory and abasement have come!

And a sight that made me laugh in prosperity—

how soon it returned in adversity to make me weep!

Far be it that I should be fooled by power again!

The habitual visitor to rulers' gates has gone astray.

What ails death, that it went and chose my supporting kin,

and singled out those who gave to me and supplied my mounts?

It left me life's bitterness, while

its blows carried off the generous hosts, the mighty spearmen.

They embolden Time against me if cowardice seizes

its calamities and it avoids calling me.

When they see it stretch a hand toward me, they place

in it huge boulders to pelt me.

Kinsmen—whose worst strain has always plagued me:

a vein of baseness that infects them but passes me by.

    لا بُدَّ بَعدَ مَدىً أَن يَستَمِرّوني

    They seasoned themselves with me, as though I were cut saltwort;

after a while, they must find me bitter.

They ascribed a stock to me after splintering it,

and pasted a hide upon me after finding fault with me.

Suppose, though it pains me, that your roots are my own:

what can you do about traits opposed to mine?

    فَاِرضَوا بِرَوقِ جِمامي وَاِستَجِمّوني

    The bucket gave you its scoopful before the river;

so accept the clear water of my pools, and let me rest.

How much humiliation! As though among you I were a camel,

driven each day by humiliation's whip.

    خُشونَةُ الصِلِّ عُقبى ذَلِكَ اللينِ

    Never trust an enemy whose manner has softened;

the viper's roughness is the outcome of that softness.

    فَالثارُ غَضٌّ وَإِن بُقّي إِلى حينِ

    Beware the spark of one whose ember you have quenched;

for vengeance stays fresh, even if kept for a time.

How could mercy beckon me, and I follow it?

I have not spared through it anyone who does not spare me.

Expect it: its lightning flashes have already blazed

in a cloud-bank, dark as the blackness of night.

When the western horizon becomes veiled

with dust, think of me and expect me.

    يَغيبُ بي النَقعُ أَحياناً وَيُبديني

    You shall surely see me charging in its foremost ranks;

battle-dust sometimes hides me and sometimes reveals me.

You will know me only by spear-thrusts, when

my face-veil is bound over my nose.

The charge of an angry man whom his grudges choke,

who turns to mingle the sword-struck with the spear-pierced.

    وَإِن أُصِب فَعَلى الطَيرِ المَيامينِ

    If I am struck, it is by decrees fixed fast;

and if I strike true, it is under auspicious birds.
