The conscience spoke of what it knew:

You are the arbiter, so give your verdict.

    Abashed, he embellishes his excuse,

and an excuse bears witness for one who feels remorse.

Do not charge me with a misstep

that my foot rashly brought upon me.

For seldom is anger turned against

their cubs by the lions of the thickets.

Are you anything but the full moon, whose

light dazzles the eyes of darkness?

    I clasped his palm, and

its fingertips were filled with the fragrance of generosity.

So it was as though my hand had tugged

at the two forelocks of the flood of al-ʿArim.

It came, as though its side bore

the shame of parched lands before steady rains.

It descended to you from the

consciences, on a well-rope of remorse.
