ياO صاحِبَpossessor of القَلبِthe heart الصَحيحِunbroken أَماhas it not? اِشتَفىfound satisfaction
أَلَمُthe pain of الجَوىlovesickness مِنfrom قَلبِيَmy heart المَصدوعِshattered
O you whose heart is whole, has it not had its fill—
O you with the pure heart, have you had your fill
the ache of passion—of my shattered heart?
Of the pain of my broken heart?
أَأَسَأتَdid you act cruelly بِالمُشتاقِtoward the yearning lover حينَwhen مَلَكتَهُyou possessed him
وَجَزَيتَand you repaid فَرطَthe excess of نِزاعِهِhis longing بِنُزوعِwith withdrawal
Did you mistreat the yearning lover when you possessed him,
Have you been cruel to the yearning lover,
and repay his intense longing with withdrawal?
And repaid his passion with rejection?
هَيهاتَfar from it! لاdo not تَتَكَلَّفَنَّever feign لِيَfor me الهَوىlove
فَضَحَhas exposed التَطَبُّعُaffectation شَيمَةَthe character of المَطبوعِthe naturally disposed person
Far from it! Do not feign love for me;
Do not pretend to return my love,
affectation has laid bare one's inborn character.
Pretense exposes the pretender's nature.
كَمhow often قَدindeed نَصَبتُI set لَكَfor you الحَبائِلَthe snares طامِعاًhopeful
فَنَجَوتَyet you escaped بَعدَafter تَعَرُّضٍexposure لِوُقوعِto capture
How often I have laid snares for you, full of hope,
How many snares I set for you, hoping,
yet you escaped after risking capture.
Yet you escaped, evading capture.
وَتَرَكتَنيand you left me ظَمآنَthirsty أَشرَبُI drink غُلَّتيmy burning thirst
أَسَفاًin grief عَلىfor ذاكَthat اللَمىthe dusky hue of lips المَمنوعِdenied
And you left me thirsty, drinking down my burning thirst,
You left me thirsty, drinking my bitterness,
grieving for those forbidden dusky lips.
Grieving for that forbidden sweetness.
قَلبيmy heart وَطَرفيand my gaze مِنكَbecause of you هَذاthis one فيin حِمىthe precincts of

My heart and my gaze: through you, this one is in the realm
My heart and eyes - one in the heat of summer,
of summer heat, and that one in the gardens of spring.
The other in the gardens of spring.
كَمhow many لَيلَةٍa night جَرَّعتَهُyou made him swallow فيthroughout طولِهاits length
غُصَصَchoking draughts of المَلامِreproach وَمُؤلِمَand the pain of التَقريعِrebuke
How many a night, through all its hours, you made him swallow
How many nights you made me drink
the choking draughts of reproach and the sting of rebuke.
The bitterness of blame and painful rebuke.
أَبكيI weep وَيَبسِمُand he smiles وَالدُجىand the darkness ماwhat lies بَينَناbetween us
حَتّىuntil أَضاءَit shone بِثَغرِهِwith his smiling mouth وَدُموعيand my tears
I weep and he smiles, and darkness lies between us,
I weep while the darkness between us smiles
until it shines with his smiling mouth and my tears.
Until it lights up with his grin and my tears.
تَفليpick through أَنامِلُهُhis fingertips التُرابَthe dust تَعَلُّلاًseeking distraction

His fingertips pick through the dust for distraction,
His fingers play with the dust lazily
while my fingertips tap my tooth in regret.
While my fingers are broken in my old age.
قَمَرٌa moon إِذاwhen اِستَخجَلتَهُyou make him blush بِعِتابِهِby reproaching him
لَبِسَhe donned الغُروبَthe setting وَلَمand did not يَعُدreturn لِطلوعِto rise
A moon: when you make him blush by reproaching him,
A moon, when you reproach it,
he clothes himself in setting and does not rise again.
Puts on the veil of sunset and ceases to rise.
لَوif حَيثُwhere يُستَمَعُis heard السِرارُthe whispered talk وَقَفتُماyou two had stood
لَعَجِبتُماyou two would surely have marveled مِنat عِزِّهِhis pride وَخُضوعيand my submission
Had you two stood where the whispered talk could be heard,
If we could stand where secrets are heard
you would surely have marveled at his pride and my submission.
You would be amazed at his pride and my submission.
أَبغيI seek هَواهُhis love بِشافِعٍthrough an intercessor مِنfrom غَيرِهِsomeone other than him
شَرُّthe worst of الهَوىlove ماthat which نِلتَهُyou gained it بِشَفيعِthrough an intercessor
I seek his love through an intercessor other than him;
I seek his love through others’ mediation
the worst love is what you gain through an intercessor.
The worst love is that attained through a mediator.

There was only a kiss of greeting;
It was but a kiss of farewell
parting followed it with a farewell embrace.
Parting turned it into a touch of goodbye.
كَمَديmy anguish قَديمٌlong-standing فيin هَواكَlove for you وَإِنَّماand only
تاريخُthe date of وَصلِكَyour union with me كانَwas مُذsince أُسبوعِa week
My anguish in loving you is old, and yet
My love for you is old
our union dates back only a week.
Yet the date of our union was just last week.
أَهوِنhow easy! عَلَيكَfor you إِذاwhen اِمتَلَأتَyou are filled مِنَwith الكَرىsleep
أَنّيthat I أَبيتُspend the night بِلَيلَةِin a night of المَلسوعِone who has been stung
How little it matters to you, when you are filled with slumber,
Is it easier, when you’ve had your fill of worries
that I spend the night like one who has been stung!
That I spend the night of agony?
قَدindeed كُنتُI would have أُجزيكَrepaid you الصُدودَturning away بِمِالِهِwith its wealth [probably: with its like]
لَوif أَنَّthat قَلبَكَyour heart كانَwere بَينَbetween ضُلوعيmy ribs
I would have repaid you for rejection in kind [probable reading],
I would have rewarded your rejection with its due
if your heart were between my ribs.
If only your heart was between my ribs.
