أَياO أَثَلاتِtamarisk trees القاعِthe low plain كَمhow much نَضحُshedding عَبرَةٍa tear
لِعَينيfor my eye إِذاwhen مَرَّpassed المَطيُّthe riding camels بِذيat Dhu الأَثلِal-Athl (the tamarisks)
O tamarisks of the plain, how many tears spill
O remnants of the dwellings, how many tears
From my eye when the riding camels pass Dhu al-Athl!
My eyes shed when the rider passes by the ruins
وَياand O عَقَداتِknolls الرَملِthe sand كَمhow many لِيَfor me أَنَّةٌa groan
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle تَذَكَّرتُI remembered الشَقيقَal-Shaqiq مِنَamong الرَملِthe sands
And O knolls of sand, how many a groan is mine
O sand dunes, how much yearning I have
Whenever I recall al-Shaqiq among the sands!
When I recall my beloved from the sand
وَياand O ظُعُناتِcamel caravans الحَيِّthe clan يَومَon the day تَحَمَّلواthey departed
عُقِرتِmay you be hamstrung وَأَفنىand may he destroy اللَهُGod نَسلَكِyour offspring مِنamong إِبلِcamels
And O camel caravans of the clan, on the day they departed,
O does of the tribe, the day you endured
May you be hamstrung, and may God destroy your camel offspring!
Being hamstrung and Allah destroyed your lineage of camels
وَياand O ظَبَياتِgazelles الجِزعِthe valley bend يَسنَحنَthey cross one's path غُدوَةًin the early morning
لَقَدsurely طُلَّwas slain unavenged مَنwhoever تَرشُقنَyou pierce بِالأَعيُنِwith the eyes النُجلِwide
And O gazelles of the valley bend, passing by in the early morning,
O young gazelles of fright, they strode gracefully at dawn
Surely, whoever you pierce with your wide eyes is slain unavenged.
Long has he who you glance at with doe eyes been gone
وَياand O بانَةَa ban-tree (moringa) الواديthe valley أَدَمعِيَare my tears...? فيin الهَوىlove
أَبَرُّmore generous حَياًas rain أَمor ماwhat سَقاكِwatered you مِنَof الوَبلِthe downpour
And O ban-tree of the valley, are my tears of love
O bana tree of the valley, weep in passion
The more generous rain, or the downpour that watered you?
Is the life of the loved one or what quenched you from the flooding better
عَوائِدُrecurring pangs مِنfrom ذِكراكِremembering you يَرقُصنَthey dance فيwithin الحَشاthe breast
وَأَضرَمنَand they set ablaze ماall that بَينَbetween الذُؤابَةِthe lock of hair وَالنَعلِand the sandal
Recurring pangs from remembering you dance within my breast,
The memories of you dance in the courtyard
And have set ablaze all between my lock of hair and my sandal.
And they raced between the fox and the slipper
