O seeker of the sovereignty of the sons of Buwayh,

you have no share in that, nor any claim to it.

It is Qiwam al-Din's inheritance from his father.

Leave the rein of sovereignty in his two hands:

a champion defending his two frontiers,

with a viper's sudden onset, he bared his two fangs.

    يَكتَلِىءُ الدينَ بِناظِرَيهِ

    Death rattles in his two jaws;

he watches over the faith with his two eyes,

like a keen sword to whose two edges one must resort.

The man who gained hold of his two girdle-bands was saved,

while one deluded by what he possesses went astray,

rubbing against the keen sword and its two striking edges.

How far apart are the man who shakes his two haunches,

swaggering, gazing at his two flanks,

who has never wielded a slender spear in his two palms,

and the man who has enfolded glory at both its edges,

    ascending to its two crests!

When the position does not stand firm around him,

he stands by it, steadfast in both his conditions.

Terror makes neither of his two eyelids blink,

while the thorns of spears sting the arches of his two feet.

I have said to the seeker of his two utmost heights:

Squat down—for what is your lowland beside his two highlands?

What have you to do with reaching his two branches?

You are a stray spark that flew from his two fire-sticks.

Who today can ascend his two mountain passes?

He has already outstripped mankind toward his two glories,

as a swift steed leads by its two neck-bands.

In the sphere of glory, toward its two poles,

he becomes there at evening a third beside its two luminaries.

What youth can draw water to match his two buckets?

He has already reached the water at both its brimming pools.

Do you not see the lion in his two thickets,

    growling, flexing his two forearms,

having already caught the prey in his two claws?

Who could overpower him for it? Impossible!

I swore by the House and its two builders—

He exalted what He exalted of its two corners—

by the Lord of Mina and Lord of its two narrow passes,

and Lord of him who cried aloud at his two halts,

naked except at the two places where his two cloaks are knotted:

I have indeed branded Time on its two flanks.

He leads it, urging it swiftly along its two sides,

    as one leads a sturdy camel tired of its two pullers;

he has kept the saddle fixed on its two flanks,

until we saw sweat trickle from behind both its ears.

O my soul, hold yourself too dear to meet him.

Perhaps he will summon you to see him:

answer him—what a caller! He has called; answer him.
