O Lord of the ways of ascent, how often I have asked You for a blessing,

and You granted it to me by the fullest bucketful.

For which of Your gracious favors shall I give thanks?

The one with little has fallen short, while the bountiful one's bounty has grown.

Is it for sparing me what I had feared would happen,

or for being spared what I had not feared?
