O dwelling of those whom love slew after me,

they felt longing, but nothing like what I bear.

Do not marvel, O dwelling, that they

revealed it: whoever feels longing reveals it.

A campsite, lately acquainted, I think,

with the departed, though my own time is past.

If a hand stirred that ash,

it would see remnants of embers and flame.

Your sanctuary truly delights me when

the breeze unfurls the laurels' tresses.

And the winds polish the water, as

    garment bags reveal double-linked mail.

May a morning raincloud revive your ailing soil,

    giving it the scent of rose-hued ambergris;

    or a swelling-breasted cloud amid a night-wandering one,

the two twisting as a leather thong twists.

    Flashing lightning splits through it,

and the cloud startles it with thunder's crashing.

    تَدمى وَيَقرَعُ ماؤُها خَدّي

    I have an eye that never recovers from love's anguish;

it bleeds, and its tears strike my cheek.

And the pale camels moan whenever they yearn, and do not

hide it, while I always conceal my longing.

And I reproach the days, though they have no

compassion; and some reproach does no good.

There is no good in a world whose calamities

ensnare, and the sickness of its death is contagious.

    فَالرِزقُ بَينَ مَواضِعِ الأُسدِ

    Do not think sustenance lies scattered for the taking;

for sustenance lies among the lions' haunts.

And many a companion has disgusted me,

as camels watered every fifth day loathe debris in their water.

He drew near my hand; I shook it off, fearing

that his frivolity would sully my seriousness.

And one called miserly—if he gives after long delay,

then even water springs from hard, smooth rock.

What way is there to carefree ease

in this age, and to a life of plenty?

Each night I have wishes for fuel,

and ambitions I have pillowed on my arm.

And a man, so long as he indulges his wishes,

is led from play to earnest endeavor.

My face is a field for spear-thrusts—what, then,

have I to fear in facing heat and cold?

So I shall surely drink in honors with my blood,

and I shall surely press on toward the heights with all my might.

And I shall surely drive the pale camels on a journey

winding among the hills and hollows.

Perhaps I shall meet one who brings me joy,

and in meeting him my toil is blunted,

and repent of reviling time, when

my hands clasp the hands of Abu Saʿdī.

My dear friend, though time may carry him far

one day; the promise I have of him has not kept me waiting.

And he who seeks me out in friendship, if necks are turned

away from me and others persist in rebuffing me.

    فَالبُعدُ غَيرُ مُغَيِّرٍ وِدّي

    Do not think this distance has changed me;

for distance does not alter my affection.

And when a man's care proves good

when near, he doubles it when far away.

If you asked for my blood, I would give it freely,

    without disobedience or refusal.

Or if skin could be borrowed, then

on the day of spear-thrusts I would lend you my skin.

Or if a step should arouse suspicion—

one of yours—I would drag my cloak behind you.

It was a misfortune's dark abyss; then was dispelled

its pitch-blackness by a moon of good fortune.

And I rose from it, unconcerned,

like a keen sword that sprang from its sheath.

May God be your protector whenever separation strikes you,

scattering riding camels or the backs of sleek steeds.

And I am the one who, if calamity grows dark,

will have my firestick striking sparks before you.
