أَباO father of نِزارٍNizar تُفسِدُcorrupt القَومَmen النِعَمblessings
غَفَّلَكَmade you heedless الوَجدُwealth وَزَكّانيand purified me العَدَمpoverty
O Abu Nizar, blessings corrupt men.
Abu Nizar, you corrupt a prosperous people,
Wealth made you heedless, while poverty purified me.
Neglect has made you heedless, but privation has sharpened me.
تُرَمِّمُyou patch up المالَwealth وَبِالقَرضِand through verse ثُلَمbreaches
إِنّيindeed I إِذاwhen راحَتreturn at dusk عَلىto الحَيِّthe clan النَعَمlivestock
You patch up wealth, yet verse leaves breaches.
You mend your money, but at the cost of a breach,
For me, when livestock returns to the clan at dusk,
When bounty flows in my district, eulogy and nobility flow in my house.
راحَcomes at dusk عَلىto بَيتيmy house الثَناءُpraise وَالكَرَمand generosity
لاmay not سَلِمَsurvive المالُwealth إِذاif العِرضُhonor سَلِمsurvives
praise and generosity come home to my house.
Wealth is not secure when honor is lost,
Let wealth perish, provided honor survives.
I used to call you, but now the matter is resolved.
قَدalready كُنتُI had نادَيتُكَcalled to you وَالأَمرُand the matter أَمَمmanageable
أَماdo you not تَرىsee خَلفُbehind عَقابيلَthe remnants of الظُلُمdarkness
I had already called to you while the matter was still manageable.
Don't you see that after the darkness of the valleys comes dawn
Do you not see, behind the lingering darkness,
The first light of morning crowns the heights of the banner.
لَوثُthe winding of خِمارِthe veil of الصُبحِdawn فيon رَأسِthe crest of العَلَمthe mountain
نَفسَكَsave yourself إِنَّindeed الخَيلَthe horses بِالقَومِbearing the men زِيَمscattered bands
dawn's veil wound round the mountain's crest?
Take care of yourself - the horses belong to the tribe.
Save yourself: the horses bear the men in scattered bands.
Withdraw from your misleading folly, break off your blind lance.
اِنجُescape فَعَنfor, from لَفتَتِكَyour turning الرُمحُthe spear الأَصَمunyielding
ناشَذتُكَI adjured you by اللَهَGod وَتَحنانَand the tenderness of الرَحِمkinship
Flee—the unyielding spear lies a turn away.
I adjure you by God and the cherishing of kin
I adjured you by God and the tenderness of kinship,
And say: leave off from a path that is not straight.
وَقُلتُand I said حِدturn aside عَنfrom مَنهَجٍa path غَيرِnot لَقَمa broad highway
فَلَمbut did not تُطِعنيyou heed me رُبَّmany a رَأيٍcounsel مُتَّهَمdistrusted
and said, 'Turn aside from a path that is no broad highway.'
But you did not obey me, like a suspect in judgment.
But you did not heed me—many a counsel is distrusted.
Your hearing was heedful, but in your mind - deafness.
سَمعُكَyour hearing واعٍreceptive وَبِعَقلِكَand in your mind الصَمَمَdeafness
حَتّىuntil لَقيتَyou encountered خَطفَةَthe snatch of البازيthe hawk الضَرِمravenous
Your hearing is receptive, but your mind is deaf,
Until you met the sudden swoop of the fast gazelle
until you met the ravenous hawk's snatch—
Mother of Duhaym, carrying the daughter of Raqam,

Umm al-Duhaym, bearing Bint al-Raqam.
Destiny made her pass to bring you down,
Fate twisted it tight, as bucket-straps are twisted.
You escaped after your feet were entangled.
أُفلِتَّyou were freed مِنهاfrom it بَعدَafter إِنشابِthe catching of القَدَمthe foot

You were freed from it after your foot had been caught,
And when the press became too narrow for you,
and after the press had closed in on you,
You slipped out while the claws were still caught in the hide.
مُنفَلِتَthe slipping free of الأُظفورِthe fingernail مِنfrom شَقِّthe cleft of الجَلَمthe shears

like a fingernail slipping clear of the shears' jaws.
I swear by the sacred house and the holy precinct,
I swore by the Sacred House and the consecrated pilgrims,
And by the throngs circling in soiled robes
وَبِالمُلَبّينَand by the pilgrim-call chanters غَدَواthey set out شُعثَdisheveled اللِمَمlocks

and by those chanting 'Here I am,' setting out with unkempt locks,
On pleasure for me and relief from care,
on camels worn down by sore feet and fatigue.
That there will come forth from the mountains of Radwa and Kheyam,

They emerge from the mountains of Radwa and Khiyam;
After the stain, dignity, honor and calm,
there is calm in them now, where once was frenzy.
And whatever tears flowed in anguish and blood

And by the tears and blood that flowed at al-Khayf,
The day men will fly like the ravens of carrion
on the day people fly about like crows with flowing locks,
Wherever you see those plateaus and peaks
حَيثُwhere تَرىyou see تِلكَthose المَجاليbare foreheads وَالقِمَمand crowns

where you see those bare foreheads and crowns,
At evening they will become ravens and at dawn - vultures,
crows by evening and vultures by morning.
While the supplicant, then and thereafter, will be doomed.

And, after that, by al-Mustajar and al-Multazam,
You will meet with tribe after tribe
where, for nation after nation, you find
Parted, not joined to a tribe or group.
مُفتَرِقاًa parting لاnot عَنfrom قِلىًhatred وَمُصطَدَمand a collision

a parting without hatred, and a jostling,
The straight branch broke off branch after branch
like a lot-caster knocking arrow after arrow.
I will burst your rib with a cleavage that cannot be mended,
لَأَصدَعَنI shall surely rend عِرضَكَyour honor صَدعاًa rending لاnot يُلَمmended

I shall rend your honor with a tear that cannot be mended,
Like the splitting by the tribesman Al-Adamm in revenge.
ripping it as the Fazari ripped the hides,
Sparks of fire from the flint flew up in the live coal,

like the smith's fire creeping and flaring through charcoal.
I plunge into it with the stab of censure and blame.
I batter it with the sharp points of attack and blame,
I shake the water skin until the water mixes with blood,

like the dipping of buckets that meet where water is plentiful.
Woe, then, on the day of butting, to the doomed!
Woe, then, on the day of butting, to the hornless!
How long can the stock last under the blow of misfortune?

How long can a root endure the adzes' blows?
You exposed me to one who sees what is right.
In me you face a keen judge of worth,
A guardian of honor, burning hot when branded,

Swift to visit deadly pains that torment,

who swiftly attacked the veins' ailments and cauterized them,
Like the snarling of the wolf or the bellow of the bull.
like the restless haste of a wolf howling for flesh.
Who senses weakness in a breath of wind and hastens on,

It sensed late at night a breath of wind, then sniffed,
Advancing in the night without seeing the darkness.
pressing through the night: if it cannot see, it scents.
He who makes men sick is pelted with sickness,

Whoever sickens people, they strike him with sickness.
And he who is hit with reminders does not sleep.
And whoever is struck by things that rouse him does not sleep.
How many laden with care have lodged with you,

How often has grief from you visited my camp by night!
While I bite my lips and frown for them.
For it I spent the night bridling my ailment and reining it in,
The lion dreaded and was suspicious of the skulls,
تَوَجُّسَthe wariness of اللَيثِthe lion اِستَرابَgrew suspicious بِالأَجَمin the thickets

with a lion's wariness when it grows suspicious in the thickets.
So I put away the creaking of the notched stick,
I bellow from the throat-sac of an old rutting camel,
Until I was struck down, though I said not a word.
حَتّىuntil رُميتُI was struck رُبَّmany an نَبلٍarrow عَنfrom كَلِمwords

until I was struck—many an arrow flies from words.
Cares of the heart are allies of resolves,
Indeed, the heart's sorrows are helpers of resolve.
A man may wound himself though he is a cousin,

A man may rebuff another, even if he is a cousin,
And cut off the precious limb because of the pain.
and sever a cherished limb because of pain.
Unless oblivion overtakes you, I will force you

I shall surely fasten—unless the grave conceals you—
To taste the humiliation of defeat from me.
to both your jaws a wounding bridle.
Your blood will flow unavenged and you have done no wrong.

Your two ear-roots will stream blood; it will have done no wrong.
The springs of ignorance are the sources of regret,
Folly's watering places are regret's points of departure.
A whiff of disgrace is like the breath of poison,

A gust of disgrace, like a spurt of venom,
Which a happy man smells without knowing its danger.
you smell it with a nose-tip that is not loftily raised.
He fears it though he has neither sinned nor done wrong.

When the laughing man of the company hears it, he falls silent;
Take it as war, like the war of the blood-letter,
he fears it, though he has neither offended nor sinned.
None of us today have honor if we make peace.

Take it as warfare, like the downpours of ceaseless rain.
If you are free, not debased in your nature,
May none of us who offers peace gain honor today.
Then tell us, who are the slaves and the dwarfs?

If you are freeborn, your character beyond reproach,
She came with you, not concealing her purpose,
then tell us who the slaves and the baseborn are.
Hers are intrigues, and her womb - barrenness.

A miscarriage-prone woman bore him without carrying to term.
Calamities upon her, and barrenness upon her womb!
