مَضىhas departed حَسَبٌnobility مِنَfrom الدُنياthe world وَدينٌand faith
وَأُعقِبَand was left behind مِنهُماfrom them both عارٌdisgrace وَغَيُّand error
Nobility and faith have departed from the world;
A portion of worldly life and religion have passed,
And disgrace and error were left in their stead.
And in their wake dishonor and ruin came to be.
فَذاكَso that الطَيُّthe folding لِلماضينَfor the departed نَشرٌan unfolding
وَهَذاand this النَشرُunfolding لِلباقينَfor those who remain طَيُّa folding
So that folding is an unfolding for the departed,
So the past is folded up for those now departed,
And this unfolding is a folding for those who remain.
While the spreading out is for those remaining to see.
تَقَدَّمَتِhave gone before الذَوائِبُthe foremost (literally, forelocks) وَالقُدامىand the elders
وَخُلِّدَand was made to live on بَعدَهاafter them هَيٌّHayy (a nobody) وَبَيَّand Bayy (a nobody)
The noble forelocks and the elders have gone before;
The brave heroes of old have gone ahead in time,
And after them Hayy and Bayy were left to live on.
And after them, alas, but infamy and shame.
يَعِزُّis painful عَلَيَّto me أَنthat يَمضيhe should pass away وَتَبقىwhile you remain
وَأَنand that يَرِدَhe should come to المَنونَdeath وَأَنتَwhile you حَيُّare alive
It pains me that he should pass away while you remain,
How hard it is for me that they are gone while you remain,
And that he should meet death while you are alive.
And death should come, with you still living the same.
