جَزاءُthe recompense of أَميرِthe Commander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful ثَنائيmy praise
عَلىfor نِعَمٍblessings ماnot تَنقَضيend وَعَطاءِand bounty
My praise is the recompense of the Commander of the Faithful,
The reward of the Commander of the Faithful is my praise
For blessings that never end, and bounty.
For blessings unceasing, and generosity abounding.
أَقامَhe drove away اللَياليthe nights عَنfrom بَقاياthe remnants of فَريسَتيmy flesh
وَلَمand did not يَبقَremain مِنهاof it اليَومَtoday غَيرُother than ذَماءِa remnant of life
He drove the nights away from the remnants of my flesh,
He spent the dark nights pursuing what was left of my prey,
And nothing of it remains today but a remnant of life.
Until today naught remains but their wailing.
وَأَدنىand brought near أَقاصيthe remotest reaches of جاهِهِhis power لِوَسائِليto my appeals
وَشَدَّand fastened أَواخيthe tethers of جودِهِhis generosity بِرَجائيto my hope
And brought the remotest reaches of his power near to my appeals,
He brought the extremities of his glory near for my hopes,
And bound the tethers of his bounty to my hope.
And tied the tent ropes of his bounty with my ambitions.
وَعَلَّمَنيand taught me كَيفَhow الطُلوعُto ascend إِلىto العُلىthe heights
وَكَيفَand how نَعيمُthe bliss of المَرءِa person بَعدَafter شَقاءِmisery
And taught me how to ascend to the heights,
He taught me how to rise up to the heights,
And how a man finds bliss after misery;
And how the comfort of a man comes after hardship.
وَكَيفَand how أَرُدُّI repel الدَهرَTime عَنfrom حَدَثانِهِits calamities

وَأَلقىand I face صُدورَthe breasts of الخَيلِthe horses أَيَّany لِقاءِencounter
And how to turn Time back from its calamities,
And how to force the days to recoil from their pace,
And face the horses' breasts in any encounter.
And meet the chests of steeds, no matter the encounter.
فَماso why لِيَshould I أُغضيoverlook عَنaway from مَطالِبَambitions جَمَّةٍabundant
وَأَعلَمُand I know أَنّيthat I عُرضَةٌam exposed لِفَناءِto extinction
Why, then, should I overlook so many ambitions,
So I cannot ignore the demands of all-consuming desires,
When I know that I am subject to extinction?
Knowing I am prone to oblivion.
وَأَترُكُand I leave سُمرَthe brown spears of الخَطِّal-Khatt ظَمأىthirsty خَلِيَّةًidle
وَشَرُّand the worst قَناًspears ماthose that كُنَّwere غَيرَnot رِواءِslaked
And leave the brown spears of al-Khatt thirsty and idle,
I leave the wine thirsty though free of sediment,
When the worst spears are those left unquenched?
And the worst canal is one that is not sating.
إِذاwhen ما(emphasis) جَرَرتُI trailed الرُمحَthe spear لَمnot يُثنِنيturn me back أَبٌa father

When I trail the spear, no father turns me back,
When I drag the spear no father cries out behind me,
Beckoning, nor a mother crying behind me.
Nor a mother wailing in my wake.
وَشَيَّعَنيand escorted me قَلبٌa heart إِذاwhen ما(emphasis) أَمَرتُهُI commanded it

And a heart escorts me which, whenever I command it,
My heart escorts me when I command it,
Obeys with resolve, never slinking behind me.
Obeying resolutely, without deceit or doubt.

وَتَكمِلَةُyet the completion of المَخلوقِthe creature طولُlength of عَناءِsuffering
I see people longing to escape death,
I see people craving to be saved from evil,
Yet a creature's full span is prolonged suffering.
Yet the fulfillment of man is but prolonged agony.
وَيَستَقبِحونَand they deem ugly القَتلَbeing slain وَالقَتلُyet being slain راحَةٌrest
وَأَتعَبُand the most exhausted مَيتٍdead person مَنone who يَموتُdies بِداءِof illness
And they deem being slain ugly, though being slain is rest,
They decry murder, but murder is comfort,
And the most exhausted of the dead is one who dies of illness.
And lingering death by disease wearies more than rest.

I am no son of the mother of horses unless you return with them,
I am no son of She-Camels if I do not return them
Scowling, refusing humiliation as I refuse it.
Scowling, spurning injustice like my defiance.
وَأُرجِعُهاand I turn them back مَفجوعَةًbereft بِحُجولِهاof their white stockings

And I turn them back, bereft of their white stockings,
I bring them back bereaved of their young,
When they have shod themselves in blood from the melee,
When they have slipped from the death-grip in blood.

Toward the clan of the man whose enemy was the Imam,
To the tribe whose leader was his enemy,
And whom he assailed at dawn with his command's judgment.
And whom he greeted at dawn with destiny.

He is the lion, never driven away from prey,
He is the lion, neither rousing over prey,
Nor turning back from an opportunity out of shame.
Nor turning from an opportunity in shyness.
وَلاnor عَزمُهُhis resolve فيin فِعلِهِhis action بِمُذَلَّلٍsubdued

Nor is his resolve in action subdued,
His will in action is not subdued,
Nor does he walk under cover when he strikes.
Nor his pace in havoc hampered.

He is renowned for his fires in every darkness,
He is the kindling of fires in every darkness,
And makes the blood of high-humped she-camels flow each evening.
And spiller of blood rivers every evening.

And raises the bow's cry in every raid,
I am the one who raises the moan of the bow in every raid,
With an arrow aimed at a mark, or one shot for distance.
With arrows of struggle or ransom alike.

Glory that, were a star granted its like,
Exalted - if a star were granted the like of him
It would disdain to dwell on heaven's skin.
It would spurn to dwell in the sky's expanse!

And a face that, if the full moon bore its likeness,
A face - if the moon bore its resemblance
It would light the nights with radiance and splendor.
It would illuminate the nights, days and years!

Plantings that grew tall on the hills of glory and converge
Lineages whose roots drink deep of the nurture of glory,
Upon God's prophets and the caliphs.
Meeting in the prophets and caliphs of God.

And how many a man cried for your help when he was seized by the collar
And how many a screamer called out to you when
By the brown spears, on a day without Dhuka, the sun.
Drunkenness overcame him, devoid of reason.
رَدَدتَyou restored عَلَيهِto him النَفسَlife وَالشَمسَand the sun فَاِنثَنىso he departed

You restored his life and the sun to him, and so he departed
You returned his soul to him, and the sun, so he recoiled
With the most blissful spirit, in the fullest light.
With the greatest spirit, in deepest light.

And how many a wronged man's breast had its rage rise up,
And how many resentful breasts boxed within,
And rolled out words from a contentious tongue,
Churning words of contention from the tongue.

Veiling his grudges with his hypocrisy,
He hides his grudges with hypocrisy,
Like a saddle-galled beast that covered its back with a cloth.
Like the deadly snake hides its back with camouflage.

You charged him again and again with forbearance until you slew him,
You returned his waywardness with forbearance, until you slew him
Without spear-thrusts in the fray or arrow-shots.
Without piercing, in the fray's turmoil and chaos.

When people carry a banner as a sign,
When people carry the banners as tokens
The dust you raise suffices you in place of every banner.
It suffices that the tips of spears are all the banner's shade.

And an army pressing upon the wilderness, as though it were
An army of Mudar is like torrents in the wasteland,
The necks of torrents or the backs of pools.
Their necks like flood-waves, their bodies like landmarks.

As though the hills had buttoned their collars around it,
As if the meadow showered them its rains,
And clothed it in a mantle of their fine dust.
And warded off their want with its cloak.

And horses stretching tall beneath their saddles, as though they were
Horses prancing in armor as if they are
The foreparts of long spears, or shafts of sara wood.
Stallions' chests or flasks from the Pleiades.

They lead in racing heats; their very stride wins,
Theirs are the improvised raids and theirs are the cheeks -
When they are veiled in a covering of their own dust.
When shaded by their strikes - the darkest gloom.
وَلَيسَand is not فَتىًa gallant مَنone who يَدَّعيclaims البَأسَcourage وَحدَهby itself

إِذاif لَمnot يُعَوِّذhe protects with a charm بَأسَهُhis courage بِسَخاءِwith generosity
And he is no gallant who claims courage alone,
None can claim might alone if his might lacks
Unless he protects his courage with generosity as a charm.
Felicity, and none is valiant bereft of munificence.

And you are not shortchanged in your share of eminence,
You are not destined for a meager share of glory,
Nor one content with mere sufficiency in his life.
Nor content in life with but a mouthful.

Your share of this festival, like you, is abundant,
Your portion of this world is like you - abundant,
And your good fortune in it heralds long life.
Your fortune in it foretells eternity.

If all were allotted as much as their souls desire
The world would be yours without dispute.
The world would be yours without contention.

And these festivals are nothing but stars
These days are but stars that wane and leave us
That set and grant us only a brief stay.
For a brief respite after their visitation.

So take what joy you can, and make it yours;
Take then of joy what you are able, and profit thereby,
For people have two portions: hardship and ease.
For the people are fated times of ease and of stress.

And hasten toward pleasures, for Time is intent
Hasten to luxuries, for fate is disposed
On embittering life and uprooting eminence.
To poison bliss and darken splendor.

I advise you sincerely, without pretense,
And please you with my sincere counsel, without ostentation.
And please you with counsel, no hypocrisy.

And I remember the kindness you bestowed on me,
I remember what you have granted me of grace,
So I sincerely offer you the twin pledges of obedience and loyalty.
And so repay my debt to you in obedience and loyalty.

Help me against a Time that struck me with its vicissitudes,
Help me against a fate that assays me in its crucible,
And checked my rein while it was in a headlong rush.
And jerks my reins while engulfed in darkness.

And barred me from one whose absence I count
It has distanced me from those whose enmity is my ruin,
My sickness, while my cure comes from my nearness to him.
And nearness to them is my remedy.

I have known loss; in losing loved ones there is exile,
So I have lost in losing loved ones,
And separation from one I have loved is the greatest ailment.
And parting from those I love is the greatest bane.

Do not presume to possess me, oh fate,
Is my refuge from what terrified me, and my protection.
For my haven from what has pained me is my shield.

With it I parry the hands of foes from every side,
Varied piercing blows of harm and affliction.
And evade the blows of harm and tribulation.

My contentment is sweeter to my heart than my wishes,
I delight my heart beyond what would content it,
And my usefulness is finer to me than my wealth.
And better than my riches is my abstinence.

Is satisfied with little of abundant means.

They trotted on the day the valley thundered with their hooves,
And when they warded off their riders with bellowing.
And the day their riders were wary with pleading.

They head toward you, not turning aside for any meadow
Do not mislead them to every pasture
Where its buttercups and pools call aloud.
Where their herd calls out, lighting the dark.
وَلاand not تَشرَبُthey drink الأَمواهَthe waters إِلّاexcept تَعِلَّةًa brief refreshment
إِذاwhen عَثَرَتstumbled أَخفافُهُنَّtheir padded feet بِماءِupon water
And they drink water only for a brief refreshment,
Drink only enough water to survive,
When their padded feet stumble upon water.
If their hooves stumble into a stream.
لَهاthey have سائِقٌa driver يَطغىtyrannizes عَلَيهاover them بِسَوطِهِwith his whip

They have a driver who tyrannizes over them with his whip,
They have a herder who dominates them with his whip
And sings a camel-driving chant along their tracks.
And sings to their tracks with fervent prodding.
غُلامٌa youth كَأَخلاءِlike the straps of اللِجامِthe bridle تُجيزُهُlet him pass
صُدورُpoints of القَناthe spears وَالبيضُand white swords كُلَّevery فَضاءِopen expanse
A youth like the bridle's straps, whom
A boy nimble as the brace of the bridle,
Spearpoints and white swords let pass through every open expanse.
Whom the breasts of the Pleiades nourish in every open expanse.
إِذاwhen بَلَغَتthey reach ناديكَyour assembly نالَgain رِفاقُهاtheir companions
When they reach your assembly, their companions receive
When your call reaches them, their company attains
Lavish bounty in return for lengthy praise.
Ample reward for prolonged praise.
وَمِثلُكَand one like you مَنone who يُعشىis approached at night إِلىtoward ضَوءِthe light of نارِهhis fire
وَيُلفىand is found قِراهُhis hospitality عِندَat كُلِّevery خِباءِtent
And one like you is he whose firelight is sought at night,
And one like you is feasted by the glow of his fire,
And whose hospitality is found at every tent.
And finds the encampments at every ruin.
وَماand not كُلُّall فُعّالِpractitioners of النَدىgenerosity بِشِبائِهِhis equal
وَلاnor كُلُّall طُلّابِseekers of العُلىeminence بِسَواءِequal
And not all who practice generosity are his peers,
Not all who perform great deeds are thereby equal,
Nor are all seekers of eminence alike.
Nor are all seekers of glory the same.
