    مُلسُ الذُرى قَوَّمَها لَبيبُ

    Look, Abu Qarran, at what you find fault with.

    Smooth at their crests, straightened by a discerning man;

    Ears and hearts listen intently to them,

    Like arrows, every one hits its mark.

    تودَعُها الأَردانُ وَالجُيوبُ

    A perfume caravan—its scent has given it away;

    It is entrusted to sleeves and bosom-folds.

    And the flawed dullard reaps the spoils,

    The gifted man of letters toils.

    قَد قُوِّمَ الأُنبوبُ وَالأَنبوبُ

    From me comes the quivering, sharpened spear;

    Section after section of its shaft has been straightened.

    So biting and fang-gnawing never cease,

    Until the sturdy spear comes back,

    As mere joints in the hands of a band of men.

    Indeed, a young man's misfortunes are of many kinds.

    هاجَ عَليها الكَلَأُ الرَطيبُ

    Each day a camel herd circles thirstily;

    The lush herbage has withered around it.

    لا أَمَمٌ مِنّي وَلا قَريبُ

    They seek my land, and longing is an eager seeker;

    They are neither within my reach nor near.

    يَرصُدُهُنَّ الحارِبُ المُريبُ

    Among enemies, its brand is unfamiliar.

    The suspicious plunderer lies in wait for them;

    إِذا طَلَعنَ اِعتَرَضَ القَليبُ

    He has a lookout where it emerges.

    When they appear, the wolf bars their way;

    Claws and fangs swoop down with him,

    As a thwarted, eager seeker swooped.

    يَشكو المَطى ما أَلِمَ العُرقوبُ

    My heart aches, though they bear the scars;

    The back complains when the hock is in pain.

    لِيَ اللَآلي وَلَهُ الثُقوبُ

    I mint them, while he profits from them;

    The pearls are mine, and the holes are his.

    A strange malady, despite its intractability:

    The physician laughs at its symptoms.

    Do you feel safe today, while you are a wolf,

    A stranger among them, at the grazing preserve's edges,

    If God and calamities have not crushed you?
