Longing, though their pavilions still stand?

And memories of youthful dalliance, with disappointment for a veil?

And an old man has solace other than youthful dalliance,

And for life's passing there are companions other than beauties.

Not all the days of gray hair are bitter,

Nor are all the days of youth sweet.

Do I hope for things a lifetime cannot attain even in part,

As though youth were what followed gray hair?

    أَسَفُّ عَلى راسي وَطارَ غُرابُ

    And my heart's blood must be food for the falcon of gray hair;

It swooped low over my head, and a raven flew away.

Your age-mates: either you grow gray and they follow death,

All together—or, if you perish, they grow gray.

Weeping over this world, though it holds no prosperity,

And what has passed of this world has no return.

Whenever I wish, I turn time over, and my glances encounter

    Affairs that are all astonishing.

Perdition to my heart, for the passion hidden within it,

And, among the marvels of the days, how it is stricken!

    وَيُستَحسَنُ البادي بِهِ وَيُعابُ

    At times it is reproached, and as often excused;

What shows in it is admired, and also blamed.

Indeed, the harshest of masters is a secluded maiden,

And the most grudging of givers is a full-breasted girl.

When the departing caravans would accept nothing but our parting,

And separation had a promise with no falsehood in it,

I returned, my tears dismayed at my fortitude,

Seeking to fall for heartache, yet afraid.

The heaviest burden the eye bears is its tears,

When loved ones depart and return is difficult.

Whoever has this yearning fill his heart—

My heart is ruined by love's affliction.

And whoever has white-toothed mouths toy with his reason—

To me, saliva is the hotter of the two cool things.

My hem keeps clear of indecency, as though

A girdle and a veil upon it barred such acts.

If I do not obtain from a town what I desire,

It does not please me that the lands are spacious.

Will abundant water throughout the world benefit me,

While no drink yet rescues me when I thirst?

I have an hour in every land, when it is as though

Mist from it veils the air and the eyes.

The first of its dust is far from its last,

And spear-thrusts pass to and fro within it.

No barrier lies between my horses and my goals,

Nor can darkness draw a veil before my resolve.

Fine steeds are ridden to raid the tribes,

And lands are crossed to attain eminence.

And many a bright-faced man treads upon the cheek of his night,

As a sheath parts from a keen blade.

    وَخَيرٌ مِنَ الطُعمِ الذَليلِ تُرابُ

    He spurns food his sword has not won;

Dust is better than food gained in humiliation.

How could one fear abasement, whose home is

The darkness of nights, with spears for its precinct?

Enemies cannot reach me with a murderous stroke,

While the emir's courtyard and gate stand before me.

The tips of spearheads tumble down before him,

And glance away, even if the stars were lances.

Through him I have donned a garment of might that wards off

    Calamity's thrusts and blows.

I called, and he answered me; had I called

Another, my words would have gone forth, but the reply faltered.

Indeed, the gifts from Muhammad's right hand

Pour more abundantly than rain a cloud has yielded.

Glances like an Indian-forged sword cleaving the dust,

And a face like a meteor dispelling darkness.

    وَبَعضُ مَواعيدِ الرِجالِ سَرابُ

    Without an intercessor, he gives what you seek;

Some men's promises are a mirage.

A young man who unsettles his enemies, as though he were

The blaze of Najir, and the rebels lizards.

If he wishes, words take the place of his deeds,

And a letter from him stands in place of the keen sword.

    وَيَنظُرُ غَضباناً وَلَيسَ سِبابُ

    He is sometimes held in awe, yet there is no tyranny;

He looks in anger, yet there is no abuse.

Anyone but him is hateful to my heart, even if

That man's abundant favors follow one another to me.

The sight of anyone else burdens my eyes,

Though I might find hopes and pursuits in him.

No generosity until desires grow weary,

And no pardon until punishment is prolonged.

May those you surpass be your ransom:

Men hard and unyielding when bestowing bounty.

    وَإِن طالَعوا عِزّاً شَهِدتَ وَغابوا

    When they hasten toward glory, you excel and they falter;

If they seek honor, you are present and they absent.

Your safeguard against enemies' censure is the teat of bounty,

Flowing freely, with no bindings tied upon it.

Not everyone who rises has a rank like yours,

Nor is every soaring creature in the sky an eagle.

King al-Mansur is nothing but a mighty lion,

Whose claw and fang in this age come from you.

Through your resolve, his resolve strikes his enemy,

With the piercing force of a keen point strengthened by its shaft's joints.

You rescued the flocks of your subjects after

Their grudges and rancors had flared.

When a desert-dweller grew rebellious and kindled his fire

    For treachery—traitors indeed are wolves—

You sent him death without an advance scout,

Carried at a trot by lean-bellied Arabian steeds.

Steeds of foreign stock gnaw their bits, while

Blood and saliva have flowed across every wasteland.

Flourishing their forelegs, playing with their steps,

While spear-thrusts play at their throats.

No land but flings its dust

Upon him; hills and mountain passes pelt him.

    وَسالَت مُروجٌ بِالقَنا وَشِعابُ

    He fled, and you charged the steeds with his pursuit;

Meadows and ravines flowed with lances.

He plunged into a sea of iron, and behind him

The waters of death surged and swelled.

He had already shown repentance, had you accepted it,

And had repentance helped one who offended against you.

I seem to see a halted company, with him among them:

They have settled in a land, and tree trunks are their mounts.

Bare save for blood; with it grew slack

Wrists and necks in death's bondage.

Every living being shrinks away from them, as though they were

    Scabby camels with smeared hides.

How wondrous that bare-backed thing between your fingers,

Blazing, dyed with the color of ink!

Faithful to secrets, though without protective zeal,

And penetrating an adversary, though no sword point.

No glory touched it? Nay: a palm

With lineage among the noble is its sheath.

I surely hope for a great change in my condition through you,

And a matter before which I both hope and fear.

Perhaps my time will turn toward me with kindness,

And the afflictions angry with me will be appeased.

I am not one who makes poetry a ladder

To an aim, if plain address can serve as well.

No panegyric while I can avoid it; but if there is

Praise against my will, there is no reward.

Ali, the Prophet, and Fatima would not allow me—

My forebears—to have reproach twist my honor.

    وَثُمَّ طُلوعٌ بِالأَذى وَغِيابُ

    Do not shut your eyes to the enemy's day or night;

And then come risings with harm, and disappearances.

An aggressor may drive himself to death

When his milk-skins are empty of what he sought.

Take what is clear from every age, for

Its prosperity is gain and plunder for us.

Live, climbing every mountain pass in glory,

With tents and pavilions of eminence above you.
