Is there no news arriving from the region of al-Ghawr,
News of the valley's edge has come,
Borne onward by the forelegs of swift-striding camels?
Brought by riders' outstretched hands,
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَرجوsurely hope خُطوَةًa step لَوذَعِيَّةًshrewd

And I indeed hope for a shrewd step
And I hope for a courageous step
That brings us to answer the call of glory and noble deeds.
That will answer the call of glory and nobility,

With it we cure souls of longing's sigh,
With it we will cure souls
Souls that strain upward between uvulas and chests.
That look between dreams and resolves,
وَإِنّيand indeed I عَلىdespite ماwhat يوجِبُimposes الدَهرُTime لِلفَتىupon a young man

And I, despite what Time imposes upon a man,
And though fate makes the young man bear
Even if it makes him bear the weight of momentous affairs,
The weightiest of matters,

أُسائِلُI keep asking عَنabout أَظعانِكُمyour caravans كُلَّevery قادِمِnewcomer
Remain at the edges of the mountain passes, in longing,
I remain on the fringes of the dunes, youthfully
Questioning every newcomer about your caravans.
Asking about your welfare, all newcomers,
وَأَرقُبُand I watch خَفاقَthe flutter of النَسيمِthe breeze إِذاwhen حَداurges onward with song

And I watch the breeze's flutter as it drives with song
And watching the fluttering of the breeze, when it blows
From the west the necks of the onrushing winds.
From the west, the necks of attacking winds,

O daughters of night travel, this is he whose heart once
Daughters of travel, he whose heart
Made you endure the fire of firm resolves.
Urged you to pray with determined fire,
وَنِand [unclear as written] كُلِّevery وَضّاحِgleaming الحُسامِthe sharp sword مُشَمِّراًgirded for action

And [unclear wording] every bright-sworded man, girded for action,
And every brave sword-wielder
When the faces of injustice grew pale among us.
When the faces of injustice turned pale amongst us,

He smooths away the enemy's rancor, yet he only
Wiping the enemies' tendons, and yet
Kisses a mouth among the mouths of spotted serpents.
Kissing a mouth from the enemy's gaps,

When he joined the renewed battle, there clashed
When war summoned its helpers, breastbones
The points of keen blades amid throats and skulls.
Collided amidst skulls and turbans,
وَعَفَّرَand he cast into dust فُرسانَthe horsemen of العِداthe enemies وَدِماؤُهُمwhile their blood

And he cast the enemy's horsemen into the dust, their blood
And his blood caked the foes' horsemen
Clotted between their beards and turbans.
Between beards and headwraps.
حَداًdrove فَقَدُهُhis loss كُلَّall العُيونِthe eyes إِلىto البُكاweeping

فَقَطَّعَso it severed أَرسانَthe halters of الدُموعِthe tears السَواجِمِstreaming
His loss drove every eye to weeping,
It lost all eyes in weeping
So it severed the halters of streaming tears.
And cut off the surging, flowing tears,
وَماand never خَطَرَتarose مِنهُfrom him عَلىagainst المَجدِglory زَلَّةٌa lapse

And no lapse of his ever marred glory,
And no slip ever touched his glory,
So that he should gnash his teeth in remorse in its wake.
Whereat regret would clang with remorse.
أَلاah لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether أَبيتَنَّI shall surely spend the night لَيلَةًa night

Ah, would that I knew: shall I ever spend a night
Oh would that I knew, did you spend a night
Battering the necks of hills with camel footpads?
Where I make the necks of mounts touch the blade?
وَهَلand will تَقذِفُfling البَيداءُthe desert رَحليmy saddle إِلَيكُمُtoward you

And will the desert fling my saddle toward you,
Will the desert cast my journey to you
As the noses of mountain passes breathe away my night?
As the nostrils of brisk camels breath at night?
وَلابُدَّand inevitably أَنthat أَلقىI meet العِداthe enemies فيamid خَميلَةٍa thicket

And I must meet the enemy amid a thicket
I must meet the foe in an ambush
Of horses driven back by spears and keen swords.
Of horses turned by the spear and swords.
