أَمُضِرَّةٌis she harmful بِالبَدرِto the full moon طالِعَةٌrising
أَمُضِرَّةٌ بِالبَدرِ طالِعَةٌ
عِندَbefore العُيونِthe eyes وَضَرَّةُand a rival-wife of الشَمسِthe sun
عِندَ العُيونِ وَضَرَّةُ الشَمسِ
Is she, rising, a bane to the full moon
Like the rising moon she appeared
Before the eyes, and the sun's rival-wife?
Dazzling eyes like the brilliance of the sun

يَومي عَلَيَّ أَمَرُّ مِن أَمسي
Because of you, I am in grief upon grief;
I pine for you more with each passing day
My day is more bitter to me than my yesterday.
Today is more bitter for me than yesterday

عَظُمَ البَلاءُ بِها عَلى الإِنسِ
She is a female jinn, and her tribe are human;
She is a heavenly beauty, the ideal of mankind
Because of her, affliction has grown great upon humankind.
But being with her brings great agony

And she says—when I came to ask her
When I came to ask her for relief
How a relapsing illness might be cured—
From the pain of my wretched sorrow

"How strange of him to come seeking, for
How amazing that he came to ask
The heart's affliction, charms against possession!"
For a cure from the one who caused his wound

Do not deny this wasting away—does not
Do not deny that I have grown thin and weak
My soul melt away for you from my very self?
My soul melts for you from within my soul
