I see my soul yearning for the stars
I shall carry it into mighty peril.
I will carry it through great danger

Except that the nights are among my foes.
Except that the nights are among my opponents

My mouth's rein to a heart that keeps its secrets.
The rein of my mouth to a silent heart

I have braved along the paths to the fortune I seek.

I thank for it the night of oblivion

When the face is disguised by its drawn look.
When the face is veiled by arrows

And shielding a pure lineage from indignity.

You wake in the morning by the strike of a stab
Like the kicks of dry she-camels straying from their herdsman.
Like the spear of the warrior freed from the whetstone

And it overwhelms them when the lofty meet
By the blaze of thrusts from chewing their bits.
The chewing of the stab from the twisting of the intestines

And every slender like an arrow silences
The jutting crests of stony ground and mountain clefts.
The groins of the goats and sheep

And the end of its run is a male ostrich's sprint.
And last of its decline the release of darkness

And urging pale camels as they snatch up the wastes,
And the trotting of the stallion snatches the meadows
By prolonging the easy trot into a swifter pace.
By dictating to the lead rope on the tethering place

As though their stars were grubs in a hide.
As if its stars are the wool of leather

Their thick lips at the copious pool.

And they returned when the belt of Pleiades declined
While dawn charged in pursuit of the stars.
And dawn spun seeking the stars

And keenness appeared to our eyes beyond dawn
Behind the dawn, like a slapped cheek.
Like a gentle cheek beyond the horizon

I unleashed my she-camels so they grazed
Their lips were raiding the tender grass.
Changing their lips upon the vegetation

Oh if only I sit conversing one day
My heart free from the torment of cares?
With a heart free of the hardship of worries

And I cling to the she-camels my liver and it pounds towards me
Toward me from the dune the breeze's ardor?
From the she-camels the passion of the breeze

Smiling with tattoos from the seasonal rains?
Laughing from the threshing floors

I see the days proceeding upon us
With calamities of theirs, both white and black.
With harm from its misfortunes and disgrace

A chronic disease misleads our souls
Then surrenders us to barren earth.
So it hands us over to barren land

And time isolates us without a relative
To shelter us from time, and no close friend.
Who would blame time, no bosom friend

And we meet before the encounter with death
The spears of sickness stabbing into bodies.
The spears of disease piercing the bodies

When death comes at evening and my creditor approaches.
When harm passes and my enemy is covered

And lack of wealth diminish a forbearing man.
And lack of money decrease a wise one

He blames though he was blamed, and the worst thing
Is when reproach meets you from one himself blameworthy.
Is when no fault comes from a blamer

But my nature returns me to lowering my eyes.
Then my tent returns me to composure

My fathers who rose up refused blame for me
To an 'Anqa' of noble roots.

When they attacked enemies, they returned
Having drowned grudges in forbearance.
Having submerged hatreds in sweetness

And I refused to stay my encampment
In Wadi al-Ramth or on Mount al-Ghamim.
In the valley of al-Ramth or the cloudy mountain

So why do I not brace myself for it?

Who are seen as keen blades, or with Romans.
Who see ruins or with Romans

I would refrain from misfortunes from Tamim

So do not expose yourselves to the arm of Aad
Self-assured at his lair, grim-faced.
Debased when his filth is exposed

The opposite of its prosody, the discerning chief

By the days into a base man's honor.
In the honor of the despicable

Comes bearing misery and bliss.
