فَمُغلَقُ البِشرِ مِنها مُغلَقُ الجودِ
I see faces and right hands locked shut;
I see faces and oaths tightly shut
For among them, one closed to cheer is closed to generosity.
So the generosity of the generous is locked

They scowl, lest they arouse hope
Frowning so they don't raise hope
In petitioners and then fail to keep a promise.
In beggars, nor fulfill their promise

Their bounty is either hard to obtain, withheld
Their grant hard to attain
Through delay, or paltry in worth and rejected.
Delayed or diminished and refused
