أَقولُI say وَقَدand already عادَhas returned عيدُthe festival الغَرامِof love
لَمّاwhen هَبَطنَthey descended بِناwith us الأَجفَراal-Ajfar
I say, now that love's festival has returned,
I say, now that the feast of love has returned
When they descended with us to al-Ajfar:
When we alighted in Al-Ajfar
أَياO صاحِبيmy companion أَتَرىdo you see نارَهُمtheir fire
فَقالَso he said تُرينِيَyou show me ماwhat أَرىI see
"O my companion, do you see their fire?"
O friend of mine, do you see their fire?
He said, "You show me what I see."
He said, "You show me what I do not see"
دَعانيcalled to me الغَرامُlove وَلَمand did not يَدعُهُcall to him
فَأَبصَرتُso I saw ماwhat لَمnot يَكُنhe was مُبصِراseeing
Love called to me, but did not call to him;
Love called me, though it did not call him
So I saw what he was not seeing.
So I saw what he could not see
فَماso not زِلتُI ceased أُطرِبُهُI stir his feelings بِالحَنينِwith yearning
وَأُذكِرُهُand I remind him المَنزِلَthe dwelling المُقفِراdeserted
So I kept stirring his feelings with yearning,
And I have not ceased to disturb him with yearning
And reminding him of the deserted dwelling,
And remind him of the abandoned abode
إِلىuntil أَنthat تَنَفَّسَhe breathed عَنout زَفرَةٍa sigh
وَإِنَّand indeed مِنَfrom الوَجدِlonging مُستَعبِراmoved to tears
Until he breathed out a sigh,
Until he sighed from a gasp
And, indeed, was moved to tears by longing.
And verily from passion he seeks deliverance
