أَقولُ لَبَّيكَ وَلَم تُنادِ
ماhow أَوقَعَstrikes hard المَوتَdeath عَلىupon الجَوادِthe generous man
ما أَوقَعَ المَوتَ عَلى الجَوادِ
I say, “At your service,” though you have not called.
I hear your call though you do not call me
How hard death strikes the generous man!
Nor has death befallen the steadfast horse
ماnot كُنتَyou were إِلّاexcept حَيَّةًa serpent بِوادِin a valley

وَأَسَداً عَلى العَدُوِّ عادِ
You were nothing but a serpent in a valley,
You were but a serpent in the valley
And a lion charging upon the enemy.
And a lion against the hostile foe

And many a neighbor of mine from among the foes
Many a neighbor of mine from among the enemies
Set my pillar upright after humiliation,
Stood as my pillar after humiliation
كَأَنَّهُas though he فيamid الكُرَبِthe afflictions الشِدادِsevere

جارُ الحُذاقيِّ أَبي دُوادِ
As though he, amid grievous afflictions,
As though in most dire straits
Were the neighbor of al-Hudhaqi, Abu Duwad.
The neighbor of Hudhali, my father Dauad
