How did you serve her to Abu al-Ghamr as his morning draught—

    unruly, leaping like a grasshopper,

frisking like a chestnut mare on her racecourse,

shying from sound with a wondrous dash?

The rider, if he puts her to the task, rides

through the night; and she captures the captor.

Daughter of the vine, the sun her wet nurse—and never

did she grow up in the lap of a mother and father.

She was seized by force; what was imprinted upon her body

by the non-Arab's foot is visited upon the Arab's head.
