He brought her, her flesh drawn up above the shank,

Spirited, from the inheritance of Abu al-Ghaydaq.

She moans—and moaning belongs to those who yearn.

    How longing clings to she-camels!

She walks on a sole of spilled blood,

Not one of coarse hair or layered leather.

Remember the dune's sand, and yearn,

And the cool water of Al'as and Saqi,

Gushing from a plentiful, enduring watercourse.

He fed her salt forage among lean, highbred she-camels,

In grassy pastures on the bare plain—

A shaggy man, his upper chest-bones showing,

As though he were, in his worn-out rags,

In his haughtiness, a wearer of crown and necklaces.

    فُواقُها أَدنى مِنَ الفُواقِ

    A prolific slaughterer of marrow-rich camels;

Their respite is shorter than a milking pause.

Sun-darkened, except where his belt lies,

He brings down the edge of his keen-cutting sword,

A foe to the camel-hobbler and the tethering loops,

Making the lodging habitable for traveling companions.

She passed over the rounded hills and stony flats,

Like the passage of a trailing, towering cloudbank,

Flying in a throbbing march toward water,

Like a bucket slipping free of its crossbars,

    Scattering Iraq's soil over Najd,

As though she were part of the lingering surge,

While night had blinded the canopy's rising light,

Like a tribe's warner who strove hard to catch up,

Warning of an army quick to overtake,

Advancing, heedless of what it meets.
