Give the dwellings the last of your fortitude,

and forsake tears and the cause of grief.

Hold yourself above their saying, ‘He has forgotten

and yielded to the summons of censure and rebuke.’

Do you turn from ruins where you once delighted

in all you wished of slender-waisted and graceful women?

The nights have folded away its familiar features—

every landmark and piled structure it had.

Love now leaves no trace there,

and decay spreads there without end.

I remember its hills bringing together

    graceful gazelles and lions,

in the days when one whom passion slew

walked without reason or redress for his death.

Indeed, those who roused through their parting

what they had stored up in nearness for separation—

what harm would it have done them, as parting urged them on,

had they soothed us with the prospect of tomorrow?

They felt longing but gave nothing; and many a man laden

with reproach upon my trail had never felt longing.

Would that the one to whom hope clung,

since he gave the lovelorn nothing, had never given at all.

I saw them when their encampment

rattled with tent ropes and poles.

It was as though a hook-beaked raptor's talons

were sinking between heart and liver.

And many an innocent girl behind the curtains had

kinship with the great pearl of a necklace.

She emerged as a white antelope emerges, unadorned,

yet her neck's own graceful length was its ornament.

    يَجرينَ مِن شَهدٍ عَلى بَرَدِ

    She draws arak twigs across well-spaced teeth;

they glide from honey over hailstones.

    ما أَنتِ مِن غَيِّي وَمِن رَشدي

    Away from me! You are not what I desire;

you belong neither to my folly nor to my right guidance.

The nights have fulfilled my desire for you,

and I shook my hand free of passion's clinging bonds.

Reason and gray hair urged my mount onward

along my straight courses upon firm ground.

Today I follow the halter; and will

my defiance or haughtiness avail me now?

Accept no hospitality, O guest of cares,

save that of the sturdy she-camel, strong as a wild ass.

Rise; if you gain no share in one land

of sustenance, cross it to another land.

Seek eminence always; how many a quest

has come to stand close to attainment.

Either let it be said, ‘He strove and won it,’

or let it be said, ‘He went away and never returned.’

You two, say to Time in reproach:

‘You have gone too far with me, O Time; be moderate.’

How many a burning anguish is sent to my liver,

and a crushing calamity cast upon my upper back,

and marvels that were never in my thoughts,

and strange things that never passed through my mind!

Am I shouted away from every clear pool,

driven toward floating filth and scanty water?

Am I made to graze among plague-ridden forage,

whose grass-cutter, unlike the grazing beasts, perishes?

Will it benefit me, while fortune slopes downward,

to march with hopes up a steep ascent?

A brother now joins time against me,

whose day I once looked to for the morrow—

one who was more tender in calamity

than my father, and more dutiful than my son.

    فَقَدي مِنَ الظَنِّ الجَميلِ قَدي

    My favorable opinion of him bore no fruit;

so enough of favorable opinion for me—enough!

Had what lies between me and you

lain between me and the wolf and lion,

I would have gained from this one a sanctuary,

and from that one an arm to lean upon.

They both would have swelled my ranks in terror,

    out of nobility, and my resources in hardship;

and both would have defended me whenever

the blows of time began to break my endurance.

Or had the affection I offered

been a cause of hatred, it could not have increased it.

Indeed, had I cast my praise for you

into the sea of waves and foam,

it would have flung to me the clearest jewel,

and watered my land with its sweetest water.

    How many aims I fastened

my hopes upon—yet he undid their tightly twisted knots,

and sent me back from them in sorrow,

and left me there overnight in rancor.

His conduct is a laughingstock for every mouth,

and his honor a handkerchief for every hand.

Let him stand firm now—if ever

a weight-bearing foot stood firm on embers.

Let him endure the blow of my thunderbolt,

and steel his heart against terror.

Let it enter his pavilion upon him,

penetrating deep, unseen by the sentries,

with assailants that repel every hand,

and piercing strokes that scoff at chain mail,

like shining swords needing no polishing for rust,

and brown lances needing no flexing to correct a bend,

until he tastes, from the edge of their blades,

a thrust—not the thrust of splintered lances.

Whenever he brings defeat upon their squadron,

I shall never leave it without reinforcements.

I erred in asking; he erred in bringing

me to despair, and returned my hand without a gift.

So I shall make my punishment forever

never to extend a hand to anyone,

so that this shall be the first misstep to have come

from me, and the last for all eternity.
