Bring them near, that they may carry the raid far afield,

and exchange the dwelling of disgrace for another.

Choose them to bring forth lofty deeds

with lofty spears, not to bring forth foals.

Within the tribe's tents, give them nearer lodging

and stations than the fair-skinned maidens.

Set beautiful women to serve them, out of jealous pride:

for they were jealous guardians of glory.

White-blazed steeds that ensnare whoever strikes them,

on a day when a warrior's blow goes unrequited.

They draped them in embroidered cloth, to honor them,

and made pregnant she-camels yield milk for their troughs.

They fed them fresh-picked fruit instead of green fodder,

and gave them wine instead of water.

Each tightly knit-backed steed you would think

a bird that reached the summit and took flight.

The faintest sound draws from it a leap,

like wind beating a mantle against a mountain.

It brings the lance within reach, even were the shafts

as short as the whips of Aʿwajī horses.

And one radiant in form—his character has

a kinship echoed in the sword time and again.

And purity of character stands higher in rank

than whiteness gracing a face and cheek.

Ask about a people whom Time visited,

then proved an evil lodger and neighbor among them.

Their eminence was never falsely claimed,

through all time, nor their glory borrowed.

Sweet-scented in their sleeves: if you sat with them,

you would say, 'Dārīn folk who have unsealed their perfumes.'

Their lingering trace was scattered musk,

while other people's traces were dung heaps and refuse.

The fragrance of perfume replaced the hospitality fire

on their nights, when the night traveler lost his way.

Glory pitched its tent over them,

and they became a fence around glory's sanctuary.

The hands of the nights pruned away from them

many a multitude that would not brook humiliation.

They embraced the hills, though they had been a mountain

beside which the torrent could find no resting place.

Fate cleft them with a sundering,

like a wooden bowl flung down, bound only to shatter.

It was no deception, but an assault:

whoever met the wound was safe from pursuit.

We lodged in Khosrow's dwelling after him,

quarters that had never been nurses to humiliation.

    Their precincts disclosed a people

who engrossed glory, leaving it no chance to be lent.

The dwelling describes its inhabitants to us:

their lofty deeds, endeavors, and lineage.

And if you do not know what those departed people were,

ask the relics, and seek tidings from the dwellings.

The house of Sāsān—calamity drove them away,

and Time reclaimed from them what it had lent.

After they raised buildings borne aloft

by pillars of glory—domes and towers.

Each close-knit in its back, with summits hard to scale,

from which eagles and vultures slip.

They settled the vaulted hall in its kneeling-place,

as a full-grown camel kneels, its journeys ended.

It bore Time until Time left it

with the load crushing its ribs and vertebrae.

Head bowed like one whose harm none fears,

    who filled the assembly with forbearance and dignity;

or a king whom Time struck down,

stripping him of collar and bracelet.

The nights weakened a vertebra of it

whose frailty finds no mending today.

    Where—nowhere now—are the abundant glories,

the broad sanctuary, the firmly wrought counsel,

and men whose shining brows were shattered,

who bowed necks with favors and fetters?

They let wealth go untended, as they did

the backs of grazing herds, but guarded their honor.

Each bruised beneath his crown possessed

a river watering aloeswood and laurel.

Radiant: if he unveiled his face,

he lit the night without kindling fire.

Clamor falls silent around him in awe,

just as rain clouds settle the dust.

Like a lion's roar, whose sound drives

sheep's and goats' bleating from the thicket where it dwells.

They lived long, not knowing we would hold

binding command over them, and sovereignty.

    وَمَشى الجَدُّ فَما عَزّوا نِزارا

    They reckoned Nizār's fortune motionless;

but fortune advanced, and they could not overcome Nizār.

They sought refuge when they saw before them

a valley into which the torrent hurled deep floods.

They saw blow after blow falling upon throats,

giving horsemen no respite, and thrusts striking swiftly.

The mighty lion emerged; then turned away

the jerboa, seeking a burrow in the earth.

They drove polytheism backward on its heels,

after it had advanced in error and harm.

They roused the faith from its resting-place,

and swept the veil from its shining features.

    فَغَدا عَيناً وَقَد كانَ ضِمارا

    They dealt on credit with glory at the points of spears;

it became ready coin, though once an unrecoverable claim.

They learned, when made to taste our might,

that the closing run had outstripped the headlong gallop.

May their dwelling after them never lack

raised-tailed she-camels bearing downpours and showers,

amid clouds whose teats hang unbound:

the thunderer has loosened their udder-bonds.

Heavy-laden, through which the rain is pelted,

like pilgrims' palms casting their pebbles.

Driving the rain through its sandy expanse,

like a vein's throbbing when the vein surges.

In every dark cloud you see raindrops

of silver, and see lightning of gold.

A dark mass whose two flanks the east wind pounds,

like travelers heaving as they drain wells.

    شَلَّها حادٍ إِذا أَنجَدَ غارا

    Like saddled camels coming on,

    urged by a driver passing from upland to lowland;

or desert ostriches racing the dusk,

answering one another with booming and piping cries.

They strove to outlast Time, but did not remain; and who

can trust the night and day to spare him?
