Nor was there a night like mine at al-Shaqiqah, when passion

Drew a pampered gazelle to my breast.

I was alone with one like a swaying bough that opened

    At its tips, after rain, blossoms wrapped in calyxes;

And with a white mouth, its row of teeth gleaming, as though it were

Hailstones—if only it could quench thirst.

So may rain bless a dark-lipped one with sharp teeth, whom you would take

For a gazelle that grazed at al-Niyy on arak fruit and indigo.

And may the red-lipped know no joy, as though

They harbored a sickness, or had lapped blood with those lips.

I love you, O color of youth, because

I have seen you two as twins in heart and eye.

A blackness the full moon wishes were a patch

Upon its skin, or cut into its face as a mouth.

Dawn has indeed made all that is bright hateful to me,

And night has made all that is dark dear to me.

    فَلَم أَدرِ مِن عِزٍّ مِنَ القَلبِ مِنكُما

    You dwelt in the heart's black core, since you resembled it;

So dear were you both, I could not tell which of you was the heart.

And the eye's arrow, were it not for its blackness,

Would never reach the very cores of hearts when loosed.

If you love a dark-lipped gazelle, do not fault

My madness for the gazelle that is dusky all over.
