أَبىrefused اللَهُGod أَنthat تَأتيthey should come بِخَيرٍwith good فَتُرتَجىand thus be looked to with hope
فُروعُbranches لِئامٍof base men قَدalready ذَمَمناwe have condemned أُصولَهاtheir roots
God has refused to let them bring good and thus inspire hope—
Branches of base men whose roots we have already condemned.
إِذاif الدارُthe house مِنfrom قَبلِbefore العَفاءِruin نَبَتwas inhospitable بِناto us
فَكَيفَhow then نُرَجّيwe hope لِلمُقامِfor a dwelling طُلولُهاits ruins
If the house was inhospitable to us even before its ruin,
How then can we look to its ruins for a home?
هَزَزتُI brandished المَواضيthe keen swords فَاِنثَنَتbut they recoiled عَنfrom ضَرائِبيmy targets
فَماso what أَرَبيmy need فيin أَنto أَهُزَّI brandish كَليلَهاthe blunt among them
I brandished the keen swords, but they recoiled from my targets;
What need have I, then, to brandish a blunt blade?
إِذاwhen قيلَis mentioned بَيتُthe house الفَخرِof glory كُنتُمyou are ضُيوفَهُits guests

وَإِنand if قيلَis mentioned دارُthe abode اللُؤمِof baseness كُنتُمyou are حُلولَهاits residents
When the house of glory is mentioned, you are its guests;
And if the abode of baseness is mentioned, you are its residents.
وَقَولَةُand a saying خِزيٍof disgrace فيكُمُabout you تَستَفِزُّنيgoads me
وَأَعلَمُand I know أَنthat لاno بُدَّescape مِنfrom أَنthat أَقولَهاI utter it
And a word of disgrace about you goads me,
And I know I cannot but utter it.
