An abiding sorrow that will not let up,

and a bygone life that will not return.

And a day, proud-nosed in its coming,

and a day, nose-cropped in its departing.

Surely he fails who has fastened upon wishes

his two hands; and rich is he who is content.

Abasement is nothing but the base man's deceit,

and a freeborn man is not deceived by abasement.

We have seen hope, distant though it is,

as a well-rope that every hand pulls.

I am afflicted, as no other is,

with two things in which no hope lies:

with an age I reproach, yet it will not desist,

and a patron I address, yet he does not listen.

When time grows overbearing toward me,

a gallant companion comes to my aid,

and a soul that, though patient, is fierce,

and a heart firmly settled in its judgment.

With it I plunge through every desolate waste

where the padded hoof slips or limps,

on every she-camel hung with leather straps,

as though mouth-foam were her face-veil.

The pebbles cry beneath her padded hooves

in varied tones, and the soft white stones clamor.

I lay into her hide with all my strength,

while the riders move in a jolting amble.

I halt while forenoon's cheek is white,

and journey while night's face is dusky.

I press on when the raider flags,

and the climber fears the mountain pass.

I unleash the whips upon the prized mounts

when the barren land enfolds them.

I bring them, still bridled, to their fifth-day watering,

sipping what they once drank in deep draughts.

The wild beasts of the desert marvel at them:

they journey by night while the beasts' herds graze freely.

I find my eye recoils from sleep,

while every eye is a spring pasture for it.

For him whose cares the earth cannot contain,

a bed may well be too narrow to hold him.

Though one stopping-place has proved harsh to me,

before it a pasture grew lush for me.

Yet when time bites, I am

a hard rock the quarry grudges yielding.

    وَقَد طَلَّقَ النَفسَ مَن يَشجُعُ

    He who gives generously has renounced his wealth;

and he who is brave has divorced his own life.

And a white sword, bare on battle day,

whose hilt mail-clad warriors wear as a mantle.

Its cutting edges surround its watery sheen,

as sandy ground surrounds its valley.

And a brown spear quivers in my palm

as a finger sets the pen quivering.

And supple mail streams down from a helmet,

as though in it the thick-haired were bald at the temples.

It subdues for me time's onslaughts—

my sword; and one like me does not submit.

    وَعُنقي إِلى مِثلِهِ أَتلَعُ

    I craned toward the lightning as it traveled by night;

and my neck stretches long toward its like.

Why should I not revive my burning longing,

now that glittering lightning has shone before me,

and give a heart, the likes of which

the breast and ribs jealously withhold?

Indeed, a young man's heart is a morsel of flesh:

it harms, yet it also brings benefit.

And a bright-browed friend I have reserved against calamities,

a mountain to whose shade I return,

noble in fidelity, trustworthy in brotherhood,

    steadfast to his pledge, never abandoning it;

swift to answer my call in affairs—

I am swifter still toward his voice.

Through him I cleared the tears from my eye,

    which had wept over others.

And I held my hand back from anyone else,

though I once thought water could not sate me.

I called you, O my champion in love,

and refuge lay in your affection.

Word reached me that you had put off the

visit because of a hindrance that intervened.

Your ailment has truly struck at my lifeblood,

as the lancet struck at your vein.

Blood whose torrent surged from a hand

that the gallant champion turns about:

    وَخَرقٌ وَلَكِنَّهُ يُرقَعُ

    gushing, yet ebbing;

a rent, yet one that can be mended.

If I had a little time to spare,

the swiftest fate would bring me to you.

Though I am absent from you, my heart

is with you; no place has escaped it.

It turns toward you and never turns away,

and drinks from you, yet never quenches its thirst.

    Indeed, alluring hopes bend me

toward you, as a neck-vein is bent.

But for you, I would not have confessed to passion,

nor would it be said that the young man is in pain.

What distinction has my longing without weeping?

    And tears are longing's sign.
