أَفيis it in كُلِّevery يَومٍday رامٍone who aims بِهِمَّةٍwith ambition
إِلىtoward حَيثُwhere لاnot تَرميaim النُجومُthe stars الشَوابِكُinterwoven
Must you each day aim your ambition
where even the interwoven stars cannot reach?
وَماand not كُلُّall ماthat which مَنَّيتَyou promised نَفسَكَyourself خالِياًalone
تَنالُyou attain وَلاnor تُفضيlead إِلَيهِto it المَسالِكُthe paths
And not everything you promised yourself in solitude
will you attain, nor do paths lead to it.
يَقولونَthey say رُمseek تَلقَyou will find الَّذيthat which أَنتَyou طالِبٌare seeking
فَأَينَbut where are العَواقيthe hindrances دونَهاin its way وَالمَهالِكُand the deadly perils
They say, “Seek, and you will find what you desire.”
But what of the hindrances in its way, and the deadly perils?
وَكَمand many a سَعيُstriving ساعٍof a striver جَرَّbrought حَتفاًdeath لِنَفسِهِupon himself
وَلَولاand were it not for الخُطىthe footsteps ماnot شاكَpricked ذاthe possessor of الرَجلِthe foot شائِكُa thorn
And many a striver’s striving has brought him death;
and but for footsteps, no thorn would prick the walker.
أَلاtake heed رُبَّماsometimes حَيّاكَgreets you رِزقُكَyour sustenance طالِعاًcoming forth
وَرَحلُكَwhile your saddle مَحطوطٌis set down وَنِضوُكَand your weary mount بارِكُis kneeling
Take heed: sometimes your sustenance comes forth to greet you,
while your saddle is set down and your weary mount is kneeling.
